Coronavirus Backstock Shelves: Is it worth it?

There are a lot of different views on the recent Coronavirus outbreak. No one knows how much impact this virus will cause our country or our world. What I do know is that if taking a little time to plan, shop and stock for an emergency can potentially make my life easier when chaos strikes, I’m going to do it.

My husband and I have two kids, one that is under 2 years of age. We know that the people most affected by the coronavirus are young children and the elderly. We want to be fully prepared for 2 months if there is a city-wide shut down in our area. I am no expert on this topic but I wanted to share what simple steps we’re taking to prepare for an outbreak.

Above all else, we’ve been washing our hands so much. When we’re with the girls, we’re sure to have everyone wash their hands before each meal and when we return from anywhere. I carry hand sanitizer now and when we’re at events we apply the sanitizer several times. It’s not only about keeping our family safe but also helping to not spread our own germs.

Watching the news gives me high anxiety. I know that anything big will show up in my IG feed or a friend will talk to me about it. I have not been watching reports on the Coronavirus because I do not want to be anxious and spread my fear to others. What I am doing is preparing my family in case there is an outbreak where we live.

How Much Did It Cost?

We shopped at Meijer this past weekend and had only one coupon. A wiser decision would be to shop at Costco or Sams Club to save on the bulk items (but we don’t have memberships). Our total for our Coronavirus backstock was $1,011.62. We have a family of four, plus a dog and our toddler is still in diapers. A large portion of this haul was due to diapers, dog food, and medications.

It took us 3 carts completely packed but you could probably get away with two if you don’t have diapers (we also had a plastic shelf to hold our goods which you may not need.)

What Did We Get?

Below is a list of everything we got. This was trying to keep in mind that we couldn’t get fresh produce, dairy, and protein if the grocery store shuts down. I understand it is not the most healthy foods but it’s what will keep us fed (including a couple treats to keep us happier). More things could be added to this list but we already had them or don’t need them. If nothing else, I urge you to get your prescriptions refilled for yourself and your pets, cleaning supplies and flu medication.

How Did We Store It?

We purchased one of these plastic shelves which fit everything perfectly. Our Coronavirus backstock shelves are in the basement with nothing on the ground. We store our extra diapers and medications where we normally keep those items upstairs.

We tried categorizing things so they’d make sense if we were not feeling well and trying to find supplies. Making a box for cleaning supplies and a box for grains helped us keep like items together.

The Girl Scout motto ‘Always be prepared’ has always stuck with me. If you know me though, you know that I’m a minimalist so I was torn on having this excess in my home. When it came down to it, I’d rather have spent a couple hours planning and purchasing these items just in case than not having them at all. They’re all shelf-stable items that we already enjoy eating so if there is no shut-down in our area, we will be happy to not have to go grocery shopping for a couple months.

Let me know if there’s anything you have on your list that I should add.

8 Reasons You’ll Need Your Phone in Disney World

When in the happiest place on Earth, it’s likely you’ll want to keep your phone in your backpack so you can stay in the moment. Soaking up every bit of Disney magic and the wonder on your kid’s faces is priceless. I am a big believer in focusing on the present to stay grounded but there are definitely times when using your smartphone in the parks is going to save you lots of time. Disney is leaning more towards making things more digital and some things (Rise of Resistance) are only accessible through your phone. Here are 8 reasons you’ll need your phone in Disney World.

My Disney Experience App

The My Disney Experience App has replaced the giant binder we used to use for planning 10 years ago. You can now use MDE (My Disney Experience) for your FastPass+ reservations, restaurant reservations, park merchandise locations, ride wait times, bus schedules and even unlocking the door to your resort room!

This is the main reason I always bring a portable charger to the park (or even a brick so both my husband and I can charge throughout the day). The app sucks up a ton of battery and in the Florida sun, you’ll need your brightness all the way up.

Mobile Ordering At Quick Service Restaurants

Mobile Ordering is becoming more prevalent throughout the parks and I’m here for it. There’s something to be said about a character meal or fine dining experience at Disney but when you just need to get food in the kids so everyone stops crying, mobile ordering is your savior. You can order food at a nearby quick-service restaurant, while you’re in the queue for a ride, and go straight to the pick-up counter after the ride, avoiding all frustration of waiting in a long line. It’s lovely. If for no other reason, you’ll need your phone in Disney for this one.

Checking In At Your Resort

After an early 2:30am wake up time to catch the first flight out of Indy, my vacation doesn’t start once I get to the parks but once I get on the Magical Express! I’m officially giddy once I am checking into our hotel. With a background in hospitality, I love talking to the receptionist about the property and gaining all those special tips about the resort. At the same time, I love that Disney makes it possible for those who hate waiting in line to be able to quickly and easily check into their room via the MDE app.

If you’re getting there before check-in time your room may not be ready but the app will alert you with a text on where your room is with a digital map of the property and your luggage will be in the room when you get there. You can even use the MDE app to get into your room if you don’t have your magic band. PRO TIP: Use the MDE App to unlock the closest door to your room during after hours when they’re typically locked. You can go directly from the airport to the parks or Disney Springs without dealing with the hassle of checking in at the resort!

Accessing Your Photos

I’ve been getting more into taking videos on our trips but I don’t feel comfortable taking my professional camera around the parks. Our phones have great quality photo and video options that will help us remember our trip for years to come. You’ll also need your phone if you’re utilizing Disney’s PhotoPass or Memory Maker to look at your photos.

This year will be our first trip as a family of four and instead of being stressed by trying to get great photos we’re utilizing the Memory Maker. I will still have my phone for quick shots and video but I’m excited to have all access to all of the wonderful photos from the PhotoPass locations and ride photos.

Restaurant Waitlist

The days of holding onto the buzzer while you wait for your table is long gone in Disney World. If you have a reservation to a sit-down restaurant you’ll likely only need to wait a few minutes before your name is called. If you’re getting your name on the waitlist because you didn’t make a reservation ahead of time or they don’t take reservations (ahem, Skipper Canteen) you’ll be notified via your phone. You’ll have 10-15 minutes to get to the restaurant so don’t wander far.

Transportation Around Walt Disney World Resort

Disney gives us several different options for getting around their resort. From buses (supposedly every 20 minutes) to monorails to gondolas to ferries. You can use your phone to check the bus schedules in MDE or use it to order a Minnie Van. It’s a Lyft service with guaranteed car seats (we’ve had lots of trouble with Ubers not having car seats). Sometimes it’s just worth getting an Uber back to your resort when the parks are closing during peak season.

Fun In The Queues

I’m a big believer in utilizing FastPass+ to its full potential but if you’re more of a go-with-the-flow type person there is a lot of fun to be had while waiting in line. There is a newish app called Disney Play that lets you enhance your experience of the parks while in the ride lines. They’ve incorporated special features within Galaxy’s Edge like translating languages and being able to help the resistance. You can also test your knowledge of Disney trivia and achieve a special pin by visiting certain rides.

Another fun app to play while waiting is Heads Up. There is a new Disney themed deck you can play while in the parks!

Updates From Disney

The MDE app has been designed to notify you when there is some interruption in your plans. The most common notification that I have received is when there is a ride disruption that interferes with your FastPass+ due to weather or a 101 (ride not operating). Generally, you will be allowed to use your FastPass+ for that ride whenever the ride opens again, or, if it is down for the rest of the day, you can use a FastPass+ on any ride in that park.

The app is also able to notify you of park closures because of capacity or when certain areas of the park are busy so you can head to an emptier area. Disney really is trying to make things easier for our special trips to the parks.

So, next time you think about unplugging for your Disney vacation, think twice because having your phone handy could really enhance your trip!

Water Safety Tips for Vacation

**This post is sponsored by Goldfish Swim School, though all opinions are my own.

Spring and summer break is right around the corner and that inevitably means your kids will be around water. Whether you’re searching for warmer weather at the beach or hitting up a hotel pool, your kids need to know how to be safe around water.

On Vacation

We just got back from vacation and I’m so thankful that we’ve been working on our water safety skills at Goldfish Swim School. During vacation, we were at a couple different locations that had pools, all of which were deep enough that my daughter couldn’t touch while having her head above water.

Because she’s a Glider 2 at Goldfish Swim School she’s working on turning over on her back while she swims to catch her breath. This was extremely helpful during this trip because she was calm enough to think ahead when she was running out of energy or air and turn herself over. She also had amazing confidence in the water which I hadn’t seen in her before.

Our smaller swimmer was excited to practice some of the drills she learned in class such as the otter float, jumping into my arms in the pool, and climbing out of the pool herself.

Swim Safety Tips for Vacation

Goldfish Swim’s TOP priority is swim safety and in class, we learned:

  1. About lifeguards. What their job is and how to recognize them. TIP: Always know if and when lifeguards are on duty, and don’t swim alone if there are no lifeguards on duty.
  2. Posted signs. Pay attention to posted swim times. The times may be when lifeguards are on duty or when the pool is open, but the times are listed for a reason – so heed them.
  3. Scope things out. Check out pool first – for the depth throughout, any ledges on the sides to be aware of if jumping in, where ladders are, etc. At the beach, notice any boundaries and be sure to wade through the water and notice any drop-offs and what the bottom of the water is like.

These tips were especially helpful for us on our trip because we were in both indoor pools, outdoor pools, and the ocean. You can never be too cautious when dealing with water.

Stop into a Goldfish Swim School location near you today and sign up your kids for swimming lessons! They’re committed to providing WOW! customer service and they’ll have you and your kids celebrating some extraordinary results in no time!

Loving Myself this Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day means different things to different people. Some people share elaborate dates with their partners while others feel the pressure to have a partner when they are single. I choose to think of Valentine’s Day as a day to share love in whatever way you want. That could mean with a partner, a friend, someone in need or yourself.

Our Family Tradition

Our family is starting a new tradition this year. I got the idea from Miranda Anderson’s Episode 17 podcast on How to Plan Your Year. She talked about how her family celebrates different holidays and how her family celebrates V-day aligned with our family values. I bought a Valentine’s Day backpack/mailbox thingy last year after the holiday on major clearance. At the Dollar Store, I picked up a few things like socks, sunglasses and lip balm to put in the backpacks along with a card I wrote for each girl. When they wake up in the morning they will wake up to waffles cooking and a book at their spot at the table. I chose a few National Geographic Readers for Soph, an Elmo flap book for Lilly, and a Neil Gaiman book for Jeffrey.

I wanted to start the tradition of giving small, useful items in their backpack along with a book tailored to their specific tastes while focusing on sharing our love with each other. I’m hoping this will start the morning off filled with love and gratitude so we can share these feelings with our friends throughout the day.

Loving Myself This Valentine’s Day

We just got back from a week of fun and relaxation in Anna Maria Island. We’ve been going the past few years to visit my snowbird in-laws.

On this trip, I tried hard to be mindful of what I was eating because I’d been doing the Fasterway to Fatloss program for the previous month. I’d been working with my coach, Brooke, on learning how to track macros, cut out dairy and gluten, and do intermittent fasting. Week by week we would introduce one new thing and it was a super manageable way to learn how to fuel my body and what was working to make me feel energized.

What I learned from my vacation:

Once you cut out dairy and gluten, your body hates you when you eat it again. I was more lethargic and bloated and had a hard time getting enough energy despite getting 8 hours of sleep each night and doing my runs every other day. My body was trying to figure out what in the world I was feeding it. The program does a great job of explaining why your body needs different foods and I worked with my coach to figure out what portions of each food group were best for me.

By paying for a program like The Fasterway to Fatloss, doing my monthly massages and joining a running group, I’m showing myself that I’m worth investing in. I’m not motivated to work out on my own, so I joined a group that would keep me accountable as I train for my 10k. My family has no interest in eating healthy, so I asked Brooke to help coach me through a program that would change my eating habits long term.

What are you doing to show yourself love this Valentine’s Day?

Bringing Baby to the Beach

For people who have never taken young kids to the beach, it can be overwhelming. You have thoughts in your head of how you think it will go and it totally doesn’t go as planned. We’ve gone to the beach every February for a while now but this past trip to Anna Maria Island was our first trip with a baby. I’m going to share what hacks we used for bringing baby to the beach.

Bringing Baby to the Beach

Expectations

Keep them low. If you’re dreaming about the good old days of taking a nap ocean side or reading a romantic novel, those days are over for a little bit (unless you go on a kid-free trip!) When you have low expectations for a new experience, they usually end up being better! Now, I’m not saying to go into it with a negative attitude, just don’t be overwhelmed if something doesn’t go how you’d like.

Gear

  1. Bags- Wet Bag for any wet gear (or any plastic bag)
    Bag for trash
Small Ziplock for your phone (to keep sand off)
A separate diaper bag for baby stuff (quick access)
  2. Protective gear- Sunhat with strap
    Sunglasses
    Long sleeve shirt
    Sunblock
  3. Baby Wipes and Baby Powder (to get sand off)
  4. Food- If your baby is eating solids, frozen fruit is great to help cool them down
Lots of ice water (even if they’re only drinking milk)

There are tons of sites (like mine) with all the cool gadgets and toys to make your trip more fun but these are the essentials if you’re a light packer.

Here are my specific recommendations on Amazon (with affiliate links):

Where are you headed on your next beach vacation? Maybe I’ll be convinced to try somewhere outside of Anna Maria Island.
