What to Pack: Family Camping Trip

hiking on our camping tripI was lucky enough to start my camping career while I was in diapers. I then went on to be a girl scout until I was a junior in High School. Needless to say, I’ve been tent camping almost every year for the past 31 years. If you’ve ever been camping, you’ll agree with me, that the hardest part about going on a trip is packing and unpacking. It’s stressful to remember what to pack each time you go and unless you have a set camping tote, a list is the best way to make sure you don’t forget anything. I’ve just recently been on a camping trip with my toddler and thought it time to edit my list to include necessities as a family.

What Should I Pack: Family Camping List

I will add a caveat, this is list is what I think are the necessities for camping. Some people may believe an RV to be a necessity while others may think this list is extensive. I am somewhere right in the middle where I prefer there to be running water, electricity for my boom box and restrooms nearby. Also, this camping trip was at the beginning of May, yet it was freezing. Be sure to prepare according to the weather forecast during your trip.

I polled the other Indy’s Child digital writers and came up with this list of our top 5 Indiana camp sites:

  1. ‘My favorite so far is Timber Lake in Huntington. Great area not far from home. Beautiful lake and Zip Lines!’ – Luis
  2. McCormick’s Creek SP. It’s the oldest state park in the system, gorgeous landscape for hiking, fishing and riding, and there are accommodations for anyone’s preference: An inn, cabins, electric campgrounds and rustic camping. It is probably the most understated camping spot in Indiana.’ –Jeanine
  3. Turkey Run– I love that there is electricity, a pool, free concerts and the hiking trails are amazing. You’ve got to try the Ladder Trail!’ – Shelly {okay, so that’s me.}
  4. ‘So I’ve only been twice but Shades State Park for sure.’ – Pete
  5. ‘My family loves Brown County and Turkey Run! Brown County makes it easy to camp, or stay in the spacious family cabins. I love the trails, the horseback riding, evening hayrides, the cute campground store, the outdoor pool and the water park inside the Abe Martin Lodge, and we love to climb up the high lookout tower and take in the beautiful view. Turkey Run is awesome if you love outdoor hiking. The trails and rock formations are just beautiful!’ – Trisha

Keep Calm and Make a List

The beginning of the year is supposed to be the time we set our goals and organize our life to be happier, more efficient people. Right? It’s the 19th of January and I feel as though everything I’ve scheduled in my planner this month has gone by the wayside to make room for, what seems like, nothing. I lost an entire week to a sick toddler and rather than being happy to snuggle my little girl, comforting her in my arms, I felt anxiety over everything I wasn’t accomplishing. Now you know my biggest guilt. I wish I would have seen this quote then. Keep calm and make a list.

Making a list, especially during a time when I can’t accomplish that task, helps my mind calm down. Even if my list is 50 items long and entirely too much to accomplish in the time frame I’ve given, it helps to just write them out and prioritize them. Many times those items that aren’t checked off at the end of the week are things that I realize didn’t need to be done anyway. It’s most helpful for me to take an hour on Sunday morning to make my meal plan, order our groceries from the store and write out my most important goals for the week. If I’m good, I’ll write them out in my planner, but otherwise will just make a list and stick it to the fridge.

If you’re having a hard time focusing on what you should be spending your time with, make a list. If you feel like you’re completely exhausted at the end of every day, make a list, there might be a way to better prioritize your goals. I keep a notebook by my bedside so I can let all my ramblings out of my head and onto paper for better sleep. I never look at that list but it is there to help me sleep at night. Let me know what helps calm you when you’re mind won’t slow down.

Bathroom Linen Closet Organization

When you move into a new home, things can be, dare I say, chaotic for a little while. We moved into our home three months ago and I still feel like I’m struggling to tread above water. When things are in disarray, my mind gets pretty anxious, so we’ve been working very hard on getting our home, not only feeling more clean and beautiful but also more functional. Our master bathroom’s closet was one of the first things we knew we had to tackle.

Before and After Bathroom Linen Closet

There were several things wrong with our bathroom linen closet organization from the begining. It always felt dark, bottles always toppled over because of the builder-grade wire shelves and we couldn’t seem to keep things where they belonged. Although it took us fifty days to complete our tiny bathroom closet, each step of the project was worth it.

Messy room

A master bedroom is supposed to be serene, calm, peaceful, safe and restful. I kept my blinders on every time I walked in our master bedroom because ours was the complete opposite. Sophie’s favorite game in the world is to empty a container, line all of the items in a row and then put them back in the container. She did this almost every day, meaning, I often went without deodorant or mascara because she’d put it in a different container and I couldn’t find where she’d hidden it. During the closet makeover, we’d also decided to paint the bathroom, change out the hardware and rip out and replace the caulk, meaning there were tools on every surface of our bathroom and bedroom. It was fun guys! Because I learned a thing or five during our minor bathroom renovation, I thought I’d share five simple steps to organizing your linen closet so it works for you.

Bathroom Linen Closet Organization

  • Empty. Empty the closet entirely. Lay it all out in one room so you can see exactly how much you shoved in that tiny space.
  • Clean. At very least, clean shelves, floors and baseboard with cleaner. If your closet has never been painted since you’ve lived there, roll on a crisp white to freshen up the space. Go one step further and buy or make custom shelves to maximize the usability of your closet.
  • Sort. Sort through every item in that pile of closet innards. Check dates on medicine bottles. Throw out that gel that you thought made your hair look like a wet rat. Essentially pair down everything you have because you likely weren’t using it all. Make sure you have a large trash bag for this step and automatically toss anything that’s questionable.
  • Divide. Buy, or better yet, reuse current containers to organize the contents remaining. I reused baskets from two different closets of our old home. They don’t match but they do a great job holding what they’re meant to. Make sure you test out your containers in the space before you fill them. Look for containers that aren’t so shallow that all of your contents will be showing above. On the other hand, do not use containers that are so deep that you’ll be tossing in items without regard, ending up where you were in the beginning.
  • Test. Pay attention over the next three weeks to see how you use your closet. Are you able to easily access what you’re looking for? Are your most-used easy to reach? Test your closet and re-arrange if necessary. If you find it hard to remember where things are, add labels to your containers. Make sure your partner or any  other person using the closet is happy with the new organization solution. If it’s not user friendly for everyone, it will quickly go back to it’s old ways.

Clean White Bathroom Closet

This photo may not look like much to you, but it makes me giddy. Jeffrey worked extremely hard custom building these sturdy wood shelves for our closet. I’m not worried about bottles falling over or the awkward spacing that the last shelves caused. It was a clean canvas for me to organize and fill with our essentials. Not only was I able to fit everything that was previously in the closet, I was able to fit all of our spare light bulbs that took up two shelves in our hall closet.

Linen Closet

Starting at the bottom. I picked up an inexpensive plastic container to fill with toilet paper and paper towels. I shoved light bulbs behind the toilet paper, knowing we won’t need them for another nine years (they’re hardcore light bulbs.) I use one cleaner for everything in the bathroom because I don’t like a ton of cleaners taking up space.

Linen Closet Organization

The next shelf up holds our rolled towels. Because of the shape of the shelf, it made the most sense to roll them. They all fit and will be easy for my husband and myself to easily put away correctly.

Two baskets were used as a ‘his and hers’ storage solution for all of our miscellaneous toiletries such as hair products, lotions, vitamins and shaving cream. It was helpful to use a small container within the large container to compartmentalize items, ensuring bottles to stand upright.

Bathroom :Linen Closet Organization

My everyday powder room supplies take up the middle shelf. Our vanity has large spacious cabinets below rather than drawers, making it difficult to access everyday items.  I opted to use the most accessible shelf for my makeup, perfume, favorite jewelry and deodorant. I kept only the face products that I use every day as well as my favorite perfumes, while everything else was discarded. Acrylic trays
have always been my favorite organizing tool for multiples and my makeup was no exception. In our old house my makeup and nail polishes were organized in acrylic trays as well.

Bathroom Linen Closet Organization

The next shelf was occupied by two coordinating wicker storage baskets One basket was filled with soaps, toothpaste, q-tips, sunscreens and bug spray. The other basket was filled with medications and first aid supplies. Jeffrey made a thin shelf to hold my curlers, curling irons, straightener and hair dryer. The very top shelf held even more light bulbs that were leftovers from the construction of our last home. We were also given a box to switch out every light in our current home by our electrical company.

Bathroom linen closet makeover
No one wants to spend a lot of time organizing a closet just to see it become a mess again months later! So, before you tackle any major organizing project, remind yourself that it always gets worse before it gets better. Push through, even if you have to wear blinders for nearly two months. Take the time to go through each individual item and assess it’s worth in your space. If you truely use and have a specific spot for each item, your closet will stay organized.

Does your bathroom closet need a makeover? Tell me your trouble areas. I’d love to help figure out a solution!

Earring Holder

Hanging earring holder using a tray and wires

I first met Jocelyn while looking for a seat to have lunch in the cafeteria at BlogU. Feeling eerily like the first day of middle school, I spotted Jocelyn with a warm welcoming smile. We hit it off quickly chatting about the classes we’d taken and bonding over being moms of toddlers. I’ve since stayed in contact with Jocelyn through our tribe and have always loved her quick wit and funny spin on everyday life. I knew between my trip to ATL last week and our trip next week I’d be struggling to get posts up. I wanted to showcase a few of my favorite bloggers and was excited when Jocelyn jumped at the chance to help! So without further ado, meet Jocelyn.

What do you do when you own approximately a trillion pairs of earrings? …When they’re getting all tangled, mixed up, and separated from their twins in your otherwise trusty jewelry box?

This of course is a very tragic problem and one for which there are only two solutions. 1) You can go out and get more piercings in your ears (or elsewhere on your body) in order to wear all of them simultaneously or 2) You can build your very own “Earrings on a Wire” display case, as pictured above. I recommend the latter, especially if most of your earrings are of the “dangly” variety, because wearing more than one set of danglies not only looks strange, but could turn you into a human wind chime as they bounce off of one other.

I got my ears pierced when I was 13. My mother wouldn’t allow me to do so earlier despite all my whiny begging. In order to ward me off of the concept, she assured me that the process would be VERY painful. She said, and I quote, “You know that they’ll have to hang buckets from each of your ears to catch all the blood, right?” This sounds evil, but my mother was always a jokester, so I knew she was joking. Kind of.

Once I got my ears pierced, on my 13th birthday (no buckets needed), I felt that I had officially become a woman. And I started amassing The Collection: most earrings weren’t all that expensive, didn’t take up that much room, and I derived an inordinate amount of joy from coordinating them with each day’s outfit. I still have most of them, and I am proud to say that my earrings from high school still fit. (Hey, just humor me – I can’t say that about much else from that time…)

In recent years, my husband Rob has turned out to be an excellent curator of The Collection, adding stylish silver danglies on my birthdays and on Christmas from places like The Clay Pot in Brooklyn and Fireworks Gallery in Seattle and The Sundance Catalogue.

Okay, so I have too many earrings. I can admit it. I really needed a way to keep them all straight. When we were living in the South Bronx, we rigged up a wire across a window sill for them to perch on, which worked out very well:

Note that, to avoid adding any more furniture to our bedroom, I further maximized the windowsill by storing the rest of my jewels in those skinny olive dishes (great for rings!)

In our new house, the window idea wasn’t going to work, so I picked up a wooden tray from Target (I think it was about $12) and a little mirror from there as well. Rob strung some wires horizontally and connected them to the inside edges of the tray with short screws. And voila! Now I can see my earrings, even if I can’t begin to wear them all. (The other good news is that, up on the wall like that, they are well out of reach for our 2.5 year old…)

If you are experiencing a similar embarrassment of riches, I recommend that you try this easy DIY project. It would work well with round trays, different colored-trays, and with wooden picture frames, as well.

–Genius earring holder Jocelyn! This is one of the best earring holders I’ve seen and it’s super doable in one afternoon! You could even switch it up by using a colored tray or using wrapping paper as the background. Personally, I like the clean white tray you used because it showcases your earrings so nicely!

#40bagsin40days Challenge Update

#40bagsin40days is tough guys. I had complete confidence in myself to do one task/day and if I’d skipped a day or two I’d easily pick up the slack a few days later. This did not happen. I’ve taken two large breaks so far and with Soph’s broken toes and immobilization, this week isn’t looking good either. Thankfully, next week is Jeffrey’s vacation so I’m hopping to be a crazy whirlwind cleaning twister lady and getting caught up on my list.
