8 Reasons You’ll Need Your Phone in Disney World

When in the happiest place on Earth, it’s likely you’ll want to keep your phone in your backpack so you can stay in the moment. Soaking up every bit of Disney magic and the wonder on your kid’s faces is priceless. I am a big believer in focusing on the present to stay grounded but there are definitely times when using your smartphone in the parks is going to save you lots of time. Disney is leaning more towards making things more digital and some things (Rise of Resistance) are only accessible through your phone. Here are 8 reasons you’ll need your phone in Disney World.

My Disney Experience App

The My Disney Experience App has replaced the giant binder we used to use for planning 10 years ago. You can now use MDE (My Disney Experience) for your FastPass+ reservations, restaurant reservations, park merchandise locations, ride wait times, bus schedules and even unlocking the door to your resort room!

This is the main reason I always bring a portable charger to the park (or even a brick so both my husband and I can charge throughout the day). The app sucks up a ton of battery and in the Florida sun, you’ll need your brightness all the way up.

Mobile Ordering At Quick Service Restaurants

Mobile Ordering is becoming more prevalent throughout the parks and I’m here for it. There’s something to be said about a character meal or fine dining experience at Disney but when you just need to get food in the kids so everyone stops crying, mobile ordering is your savior. You can order food at a nearby quick-service restaurant, while you’re in the queue for a ride, and go straight to the pick-up counter after the ride, avoiding all frustration of waiting in a long line. It’s lovely. If for no other reason, you’ll need your phone in Disney for this one.

Checking In At Your Resort

After an early 2:30am wake up time to catch the first flight out of Indy, my vacation doesn’t start once I get to the parks but once I get on the Magical Express! I’m officially giddy once I am checking into our hotel. With a background in hospitality, I love talking to the receptionist about the property and gaining all those special tips about the resort. At the same time, I love that Disney makes it possible for those who hate waiting in line to be able to quickly and easily check into their room via the MDE app.

If you’re getting there before check-in time your room may not be ready but the app will alert you with a text on where your room is with a digital map of the property and your luggage will be in the room when you get there. You can even use the MDE app to get into your room if you don’t have your magic band. PRO TIP: Use the MDE App to unlock the closest door to your room during after hours when they’re typically locked. You can go directly from the airport to the parks or Disney Springs without dealing with the hassle of checking in at the resort!

Accessing Your Photos

I’ve been getting more into taking videos on our trips but I don’t feel comfortable taking my professional camera around the parks. Our phones have great quality photo and video options that will help us remember our trip for years to come. You’ll also need your phone if you’re utilizing Disney’s PhotoPass or Memory Maker to look at your photos.

This year will be our first trip as a family of four and instead of being stressed by trying to get great photos we’re utilizing the Memory Maker. I will still have my phone for quick shots and video but I’m excited to have all access to all of the wonderful photos from the PhotoPass locations and ride photos.

Restaurant Waitlist

The days of holding onto the buzzer while you wait for your table is long gone in Disney World. If you have a reservation to a sit-down restaurant you’ll likely only need to wait a few minutes before your name is called. If you’re getting your name on the waitlist because you didn’t make a reservation ahead of time or they don’t take reservations (ahem, Skipper Canteen) you’ll be notified via your phone. You’ll have 10-15 minutes to get to the restaurant so don’t wander far.

Transportation Around Walt Disney World Resort

Disney gives us several different options for getting around their resort. From buses (supposedly every 20 minutes) to monorails to gondolas to ferries. You can use your phone to check the bus schedules in MDE or use it to order a Minnie Van. It’s a Lyft service with guaranteed car seats (we’ve had lots of trouble with Ubers not having car seats). Sometimes it’s just worth getting an Uber back to your resort when the parks are closing during peak season.

Fun In The Queues

I’m a big believer in utilizing FastPass+ to its full potential but if you’re more of a go-with-the-flow type person there is a lot of fun to be had while waiting in line. There is a newish app called Disney Play that lets you enhance your experience of the parks while in the ride lines. They’ve incorporated special features within Galaxy’s Edge like translating languages and being able to help the resistance. You can also test your knowledge of Disney trivia and achieve a special pin by visiting certain rides.

Another fun app to play while waiting is Heads Up. There is a new Disney themed deck you can play while in the parks!

Updates From Disney

The MDE app has been designed to notify you when there is some interruption in your plans. The most common notification that I have received is when there is a ride disruption that interferes with your FastPass+ due to weather or a 101 (ride not operating). Generally, you will be allowed to use your FastPass+ for that ride whenever the ride opens again, or, if it is down for the rest of the day, you can use a FastPass+ on any ride in that park.

The app is also able to notify you of park closures because of capacity or when certain areas of the park are busy so you can head to an emptier area. Disney really is trying to make things easier for our special trips to the parks.

So, next time you think about unplugging for your Disney vacation, think twice because having your phone handy could really enhance your trip!

Loving Myself this Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day means different things to different people. Some people share elaborate dates with their partners while others feel the pressure to have a partner when they are single. I choose to think of Valentine’s Day as a day to share love in whatever way you want. That could mean with a partner, a friend, someone in need or yourself.

Our Family Tradition

Our family is starting a new tradition this year. I got the idea from Miranda Anderson’s Episode 17 podcast on How to Plan Your Year. She talked about how her family celebrates different holidays and how her family celebrates V-day aligned with our family values. I bought a Valentine’s Day backpack/mailbox thingy last year after the holiday on major clearance. At the Dollar Store, I picked up a few things like socks, sunglasses and lip balm to put in the backpacks along with a card I wrote for each girl. When they wake up in the morning they will wake up to waffles cooking and a book at their spot at the table. I chose a few National Geographic Readers for Soph, an Elmo flap book for Lilly, and a Neil Gaiman book for Jeffrey.

I wanted to start the tradition of giving small, useful items in their backpack along with a book tailored to their specific tastes while focusing on sharing our love with each other. I’m hoping this will start the morning off filled with love and gratitude so we can share these feelings with our friends throughout the day.

Loving Myself This Valentine’s Day

We just got back from a week of fun and relaxation in Anna Maria Island. We’ve been going the past few years to visit my snowbird in-laws.

On this trip, I tried hard to be mindful of what I was eating because I’d been doing the Fasterway to Fatloss program for the previous month. I’d been working with my coach, Brooke, on learning how to track macros, cut out dairy and gluten, and do intermittent fasting. Week by week we would introduce one new thing and it was a super manageable way to learn how to fuel my body and what was working to make me feel energized.

What I learned from my vacation:

Once you cut out dairy and gluten, your body hates you when you eat it again. I was more lethargic and bloated and had a hard time getting enough energy despite getting 8 hours of sleep each night and doing my runs every other day. My body was trying to figure out what in the world I was feeding it. The program does a great job of explaining why your body needs different foods and I worked with my coach to figure out what portions of each food group were best for me.

By paying for a program like The Fasterway to Fatloss, doing my monthly massages and joining a running group, I’m showing myself that I’m worth investing in. I’m not motivated to work out on my own, so I joined a group that would keep me accountable as I train for my 10k. My family has no interest in eating healthy, so I asked Brooke to help coach me through a program that would change my eating habits long term.

What are you doing to show yourself love this Valentine’s Day?

Looking Ahead in 2020

Last week I wrote a reflection post on everything blogging as brought to our family in 2019. Obviously, blogging is not my whole life but it seemed like an interesting topic to write about. Today I’m sharing how I’m looking ahead in 2020 and what things I’m excited about. I listened to Miranda Anderson’s podcast Live Free Creative and she talked about writing down 4 wins from the previous year, writing down 4 areas of improvement for the year ahead and then brainstorming ways to make those improvements happen (she even has a download you can fill out.) I did the ‘4 wins’ part and my ‘4 improvements’ kind of came out as 4+ guidelines. Either way, I have a good idea of what I’d like my 2020 to look like.

There are affiliate links in this post. I only link products that I am 1000% behind and think will benefit you.

4+ Guidelines for 2020

Health

In 2019 I lost 30 lbs through diet and exercise. Unfortunately, I’d joined the medical weight loss program that was pushing weight loss pills (which I wasn’t comfortable doing) and highly restricting calories and carbs. It wasn’t a healthy way to lose weight or a good way to learn how to continue weight loss/maintaining weight.

FasterWaytoFatLoss. In 2020, I’ve started a new program that aligns with my values. I chose FasterWaytoFatLoss because it focuses on a whole foods diet (if it grows from the ground or has a mother it’s fine to eat). I’ve loved experimenting with new foods to see what my family likes. The program also cuts out gluten and dairy which I’m not completely sold on but I’ve noticed clearer skin, less rosacea and less bloating with these changes. I’ve only been on the program for a couple of weeks and am hopeful to see how it impacts my body.

10k. In 2019 I joined a Walk to 5k running group at my local Y and LOVED it! I really enjoyed the people in the group and was highly motivated to go three times/week. This year I’ve signed up for the next level up and registered Jeffrey and me for a 10k in May. I’m not doing the running program to lose weight but to keep my heart and endurance strong.

Meals with Sophia. Sophia really enjoys baking and making simple meals for herself. We’ve always tried to align with the Montessori method of making everything accessible to her. She finds great pride in making her own breakfasts, school lunch, and after school snacks. This year I wanted to get her in the kitchen a little bit more for dinner time meals. I’ll be doing a series on the blog with ways we’re sneaking veggies into dinners but making sure they’re 100% kid-approved!

Business

My passion is Disney. It’s my favorite thing to think about, talk to people about, and write about. I have a goal to write more about Disney on this blog with at least 1 Disney related post per month. Last year I was able to go to WDW for one day with Jeffrey and Soph as well as take a solo trip for a couple days. In 2020 we’re taking our first family trip over Sophia’s birthday in October and I couldn’t be more ecstatic. One way we’re able to have such a magical time in Disney is by avoiding lines.

Lines are the WORST, especially when you have kids. We skip the lines for food and rides constantly. This last visit I was able to get 14 FP+ and do every ride I wanted. I found this awesome site with videos and tutorials on how to do this as well as getting the hotel and dining reservations you want. Here’s a link to the Insider’s Guide I use. I promise you, the $15 you spend will save you so much time and frustration in Disney World.

Fun

Camping. With Lilly being a walker, we’re excited to camp in 2020. We took a year off to avoid the headache but my sister and I were gifted a pop-up camper a few years ago and we’re excited to renovate it and take it on more trips this year. We’ll start with 1 summer trip and 1 fall trip this year but I can see us adding more as the girls are older!

Taking it slow. Last year I overbooked us. I’d much rather be out exploring a new place than being at home because I feel the pressure to be cleaning/working when I’m at home. This year I’m working on that feeling and trying to not fill our calendar. We’re cutting back on FAM trips (hosted blogging trips) and summer camps. Like I said, we’re doing two camping trips and we are visiting Florida twice. I will book two more FAM trips for this year and that is my limit. I have a vision of us traveling a lot as a family but while the girls are so young it’s important to enjoy the simple moments.

I’m not always excited when there’s a new year. I think the abundance of nice weather and sunshine has helped me this season. I’m looking forward to some simple changes to improve my health and happiness in 2020.

What are you looking forward to in 2020?

2019 in Review | What Blogging has Made Possible for Our Family

I wanted to share 2019 in review as well as what blogging has made possible for our family this past year. As a kid, I remember my mom telling me ‘it doesn’t hurt to ask.’ I’ve used this advice and paired it with a quick rebound after any ‘nos’ I receive. After 30 years I’ve gotten REALLY great at letting the ‘nos’ roll off my back. In 2019 I really leaned into this tactic and it awarded us with some really awesome opportunities.

WHAT BLOGGING HAS MADE POSSIBLE FOR OUR FAMILY

It all started in February when I received an email from Visit Fort Wayne asking if I’d like to join them with a few other bloggers on a weekend trip to see their city. I honestly thought it was a mistake that my email got on the list because the others on the list had much bigger followings. They travel all over the world for their blogs. I had done some travel writing but always on our own dime, until this year.

I’d accepted the trip and as I talked to people about being excited about my first FAM (familiarisation) trip to Fort Wayne they gave me a funny look. They were confused about why I was excited to visit Fort Wayne. Having never heard about Fort Wayne, I didn’t understand why they were negative about Fort Wayne. ‘It’s the second-largest city in Indiana’, I’d say. They’d reply with stories of why I shouldn’t go.

Fort Wayne

Thankfully, I didn’t listen to them and was excited about my trip. Come to find out, Fort Wayne is amazing. Despite having rough patches over the years, they’re completely turning their city around and making it a destination location again. I wrote about my trip in three parts ( part 1, part 2, part 3) because there was so much to talk about from my trip! The best part of that weekend was meeting other travel writers and gaining a relationship with an Indiana CVB (Visit Fort Wayne). The trip included my new favorite restaurant Tolon, an awesome walkable mural trail, and a peek at the origins of my favorite chocolate company DeBrand. We’re planning a trip back this summer!

Local Indianapolis Attractions

The Children’s Museum

We’ve lived in Indiana for nearly 4 years now, so I’ve made quite a few connections with family-friendly locations. This year I continued to work with The Children’s Museum in seeing new exhibit openings such as Paw Patrol, Take Me There: Greece, and Hotel of Spells.

Conner Prairie

Conner Prairie had a big year with the opening of Merry Prairie Holiday and continued to make it our favorite stop no matter what time of year. Headless Horseman, bread baking in William Conner’s house, Treetop Outpost, and hanging out after school was our favorites this year.

Indianapolis Zoo

The zoo has been upgrading and adding major projects for several years. Right now they’re expanding their elephant area. We were excited to welcome the sloths and snakes exhibits this year as well as enjoy our traditional Zoo Boo and Christmas at the Zoo events as a family.

Indiana State Museum

In my opinion, the Indiana State Museum is a hidden gem for families to explore. In the past few years, they have really focused on making sure their exhibits are hands-on and interesting for people of all ages. This year we were able to check out the Amazed exhibit, Celebrations Crossing, and the grand opening of Firefly Landing. Between their awesome temporary exhibits, they cycle through, their amazing permanent exhibits, the IMAX and Firefly Landing, ISM is a full-day attraction.

Summer Camps and Lessons

This year I made some new friendships with local businesses I wanted to help promote. Through trade, I was able to write about our experiences at several locations in exchange for classes and lessons. In 2019, I was an ambassador for Carmel Clay Parks and Recreation which allowed Sophia to experience several of their summer classes including Junior Engineering & Chemistry, Hip Hop, and Knee-High Naturalists. She had a lot of fun learning about science, nature, and dance through CCPR. She also took a week-long summer camp learning how to cook and bake with Sprouts Cooking School. The week she chose was Fairy Tale themed so each day’s food items revolved around a different story. They would cook and read books all morning and it was one of her favorite classes this summer.

You know those businesses that you fall in love with but they’re far away? That’s Line + Form for me. I am thrilled with the classes they offer to kids, families, and adults. This summer Sophia attended a week-long Fairy and Unicorn camp where she met great friends and used her imagination to create all day. They’ve since moved downtown Indianapolis to be more centrally accessible for people in Indy.

One of my favorite partnerships from this year has been with Goldfish Swim School in Fishers. Both girls were able to take swim lessons all summer with the main focus being safety. Lilly is still taking lessons and they’re the highlight of her week.

Memberships

One of the other highlights this year has been partnering with local businesses for membership discounts. Defy Indy opened at the beginning of the year and it’s one of our favorite places to burn off energy. I love it because you can see across the entire trampoline park. As a parent of multiple children, this makes the experience so much less stressful! I also partnered with Massage Heights at Ironworks and they’ve now opened a second location in Fishers! In January 2019 I started getting massages and found that if I went regularly I didn’t have the chronic neck and back issues I’d previously been having. I pay for my memberships but it has been wonderful being able to have a discount through sharing these great businesses with my followers.

Visit Hendricks County

Our summer FAM trip was to Plainfield, Danville and Avon in Hendricks County (where I grew up). We enjoyed seeing things that weren’t there when I was growing up. We even started a summer tradition of going to make tie-dye at Tie Dye Lab, stopping for lunch at Oasis Diner and then going to the waterpark Splash Island.

The Best Things to Do in Santa Claus Indiana
Santa’s Castle- Santa Claus

Santa Claus

In the fall I worked with Visit SoIn where we visited Santa Claus and Jeffersonville. It was really fun revisiting Holiday World with both girls after having visited with just Sophia a few years ago. As a family of sweet tooths, Santa’s Candy Castle was also a highlight of the trip.

Falls of the Ohio The Best Things To Do In Southern Indiana
Falls of the Ohio- Jeffersonville

Jeffersonville

Jeffersonville is right on the border of Indiana and Kentucky. I wish we had more time to explore this sweet town. On our trip to Jeffersonville, we saw fossils from when Indiana was underwater millions of years ago, learned how to make hard candy at Schimpff’s Confectionery and had some of the best pizza we’ve ever eaten at Parlour.

Family Fun in French Lick Part 2
West Baden Springs Hotel- French Lick/West Baden

French Lick

The winter called for one last FAM trip of 2019 with a trip with Visit French Lick. Despite only having two days for our adventure, I had to write a two-part (part 1, part 2) post about all the fun we had. I’ve already started planning a trip back when the weather is warmer because we enjoyed it so much. During this trip we were in awe over the amazing hotels (French Lick Springs Hotel and West Baden Springs Hotel), a ride on the Polar Express, having more of the best pizza ever at Vintage Cafe, and learning about animals (including feeding giraffes and lemurs) at Wilstem Ranch.

Networking

Along with the wonderful relationships I made through the visitors’ centers and local businesses, I had a goal of meeting more bloggers. I’ve made an awesome blog tribe around greater Indy who meets once per month to talk blogging. I also made some great friends from my solo trip to Disney World where I went to the Flock conference. Blogging can be a very solitary job if you stay glued to your camera and computer. Being an extravert I love the relationships I’ve made through blogging and am excited to see what 2020 will bring!

I’m so thankful I said yes to Visit Fort Wayne. I’m proud to have asked for partnerships with the businesses I wanted to promote this year. I did not make as much money as years passed because I spent time making these relationships rather than doing sponsored content. At the end of the year, I’m thankful I made that choice and will continue to do the same in 2020!

If you have any questions about blogging, I’m happy to share! If you’re a blogger, I’d love to hear what blogging has brought to you in 2019!

7 Tips for a Solo Disney Trip

This year I was able to take a solo Disney trip for three days that coordinated with a blogging conference. I was excited to learn at my conference but I was ecstatic to add on a couple days to do Disney by myself.

Flying makes me nervous and I wasn’t thrilled about taking Ubers alone but having worked in Disney I felt very comfortable being in the parks alone. It felt like home and I’m so glad I had that experience.

Tips for Solo Disney Trip

These were the types of questions I was asked when I told people I did a solo Disney trip:

1. How long of a trip?

Because I am very extroverted a shorter 2-3 day trip was perfect for me. Not having people to share the experience with was the hardest part. I would have been too lonely past that amount of time. However, if you’re fine being on your own, I always suggest a full day for each park.

2. Where to stay?

I’m a huge believer in staying on property with family vacations. The ease of transportation and luggage transfer makes the trip much less stressful. However, because I was trying to save as much money as possible, I used Hotwire.com to get a hotel room off property for $55/night. The downside was taking Ubers cost about $20/trip so at the end of the day I could have opted for a stay at Pop Century for around the same price. The upside, Ubers are much faster than the Disney bus system and I had free breakfast at my hotel each morning. So it’s really what you prioritize. If you are doing a luxurious solo trip, try staying at a new resort in a studio that you would otherwise not fit in with your family. My favorites are Disney’s Boardwalk and Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge.

3. Which parks are best for solo travelers?

All the parks are great for solo travelers so I recommend doing all four. If you’re staying a shorter period, try doing a park hopper to get the most out of your days. While I was there I did the Animal Kingdom (AK) and Hollywood Studios the first day and the second day I did the Magic Kingdom (MK), Hollywood Studios (HS) for a little and back to the Magic Kingdom. I did it this way because I was meeting people at certain parks, otherwise, I would have done the Magic Kingdom one day and the second-day Animal Kingdom in the morning and Hollywood Studios at night. I opted out of EPCOT this trip because I like enjoying food and culture with people. If you’re a huge Star Wars fan, make Hollywood Studios a full day park and split AK and MK.

4. How to move past the awkwardness?

My favorite part of doing a solo trip is talking to other guests and cast members. I learned so much from people by talking to them about their tips on the parks and about their cultures. Look for people with an Annual Passholder slider on their Magic Band. They’ve got the most experience coming to the parks frequently and will know the best places to eat and hacks to save time. I also saught out families who were speaking other languages to talk to them about their trip. It’s fascinating learning how month-long travel is the norm for so many cultures. I also love talking to first-timers and kids who are worried about rides. There is never a shortage of people to relate to at Disney World.

5. How to stay safe?

If you are sharing on social media, do not post live on a solo trip. Wait until you get back to the hotel to upload everything. If you have a bad feeling about an Uber driver or anyone at the parks, listen to your gut and remove yourself from that situation. I make sure I only accept Uber drivers that are platinum and have tons of great written reviews. The nice thing about staying off property is that you’re dropped off right at the hotel entrance. If you’re staying on property you’ll likely have to walk to your room at night which is the only time I think I would have felt uneasy. In this case, just be aware of your surroundings and stick with families.

6. How to maximize time?

I could talk all day about various ways to save time in Disney but the two biggest are Mobile Ordering and line hacks. I took a course through Wish Upon a Planner to learn about line hacks and maximizing the number of FP+ while in the parks. While in MK I rode 8 rides within 4 hours and ate and rested during that time.

Mobile Ordering is free on the My Disney Experience App. While you’re in line at an attraction, log into the app, choose a restaurant and order your food. When you get to the quick service location, check-in and within minutes you can pick your food up at the designated Mobile Ordering location with no waiting in line. While I was by myself I didn’t like not being able to share my food with my family so I was happy to order whatever was close, cheap and quick.

7. what to bring?

There are so many blog posts about this out there. Some people like to over-prepare so they don’t have to buy anything while at the parks. I’m more of a minimalist and like to pack very little. The few things I highly recommend for a solo trip are water bottle to refill, large portable battery pack and fanny pack.

Water Bottle

Water is $3.50 and with how much walking you’ll do you need to stay hydrated. There are water fountains everywhere so just keep refilling. When I go with my family we take a Camelbak so all of us can drink while waiting in line.

Portable Battery

I suggest a large portable battery because you’ll be using the My Disney Experience App during the day and will likely have your brightness turned up. You don’t want to be stuck alone at the end of the night with no phone to call an Uber. Be sure to bring different ways of charging it because my hotel did not have a USB port for charging.

Fanny Pack

My fanny pack was how I kept my sanity. I wore a backpack to carry my sweatshirt, poncho, water bottle, and battery pack. However, while I was there I wore my poncho a lot so it became frustrating to take off my poncho to get into my backpack every time I needed a credit card or phone (most women’s pants don’t have pockets). I was also able to carry my mini portable charger in my fanny pack so I could continue to charge my phone but get it out quickly when needed. Most people don’t need their phone that much but I was constantly documenting for my blog.

I’d love to know what tips you have used for a successful solo Disney trip (or if you’d even consider taking one!) It’s not for everyone but I do think, if you are Disney obsessed, it’s worth trying once. You’re able to do tours your family might not enjoy. You can take your time or go as fast as you’d like. It’s really a cool way to experience the parks.
