My Nail Regime for the Perfect Manicure

I have a lot of people comment on my nails, how often I change them, the colors, etc. so I thought I’d write a post and share my nail regime with everyone! I don’t do a lot of the extra manicure type stuff to my nails because I do them every week and it already takes a good chunk of time. Doing my nails is a MUST (therapeutically speaking)! It gives me a full hour to have the excuse to relax and not clean. The biggest thing I’ve learned over the years is to be patient (which I’m terrible at.) If you rush the drying process they WILL smudge and you will be mad you wasted all that precious time!

My Nail Regime

I want to start off by saying almost everything I buy for my nails can be found at the drugstore or grocery store. Some of the specific brands I buy can be found at Amazon (the links below are affiliate links).

Prepping the Nails

Ok, to start off I clean the existing polish off with remover so I have a clean canvas to work with.

The second step is to trim, file and buff (in that order.) I’ve found that rounding my nails too short can cause ingrown nails so I trim them straight across and then round the edges with a file.

Painting the Nails

The third step is the painting process. I use a base coat, two layers of polish and seal it with a top coat. The Seche Vite topcoat is the product I would suggest to not skimp on. It goes on smooth, has a nice shine and helps the polish to not chip as quickly as other topcoats. Also, the higher the price, the higher the quality of polishes. OPI and Essie are my go-to brands. They are higher in price but they are more opaque, they last longer (b/c they don’t separate or dry up in the bottle) and they don’t chip as quickly as the less expensive brands. If you are just starting out and don’t want to spend a ton, I’d suggest Sally Hansen. Geez, this really sounds like an ordeal! It’s really not that bad! If you do have a lot of polishes to sort and organize go here to see how I wrangle it all.

Finishing Touches

The final step is to wait. Not too terribly long because it is a fast-drying topcoat and if you waited in between coats, you’ll be fine to not wait more than 5 minutes for this step. The key is to use thin, even coats. You’ll probably use two coats of each polish unless the polish is super transparent. If you’re only using one coat, you’re probably putting it on too thick and it will take forever to dry. It dries from the top down so it has a better chance of fully drying if you use thin coats. The colors I used today were Cajun Shrimp and Ate Berries in the Canaries by OPI.

The blue on my skin is b/c I have cracked skin from the winter. It will go away by my next shower and no one notices but me so I don’t worry about it. Two tips I thought of as I was painting: 1. If you want a party nail, paint that nail first. I always seem to forget! 2. Don’t push the brush all the way up to your cuticles. It makes for a cleaner look. 3. Swipe the brush along the cuticle line, (a bit away from it) around the outside, do the other outside and fill in the middle last. It just works better than swiping paint across from one side to the other.

Girls Night Out

I’ve only started to dabble in nail art. I’ll leave that for another day once I try out more techniques. I got to try out some pretty sweet bedazzling jewels at the Manis & Martinis party I threw for our neighborhood Girls Night In. If you need a theme for a party with 3-10 ladies, this is a GREAT one! It’s good for the experienced nail polish lovers to swap colors and jewels and it’s helpful for the beginners to learn from the pros! I used a sign to help move things along so the beginners would know what order to get set up.

It was a huge hit. I know this because it was supposed to be 1-2 hours with ladies saying they couldn’t stay long and they didn’t go home til 3am. 😉 Suckers! Do any of you have a group of ladies that get together to have adult conversation? It’s very helpful for me because I’m a SAHM and I crave girl time! Any new polishes you’re obsessing over? Let me know!

Gift Guide for The Blogger

Gift giving is getting harder with how easy and quick it is to buy something with the click of a finger. Want something? Click. It’s there in 2 hours. It’s CRAZY!

I wanted to do a gift guide for the blogger. There’s a good chance that you know a blogger but have no idea what actually goes into their hustle.

That’s where I come in.

As a blogger of 6 years, I’ve accumulated a lot of tech gear that’s helped me do my job more efficiently and at a higher quality. These items have a wide range of price points but there’s definitely something on this list for every blogger.

Gift Guide for The Blogger

The Amazon links are affiliate links and will give me a percentage of profit from your purchase.

Instagram Preset- An Instagram preset is a filter for photos so their feed looks congruent. Some of my favorite presets are through A Color Story. I especially like The Shore for brightening photos.

Camera Clicker- In order to be in the photos we can either set a timer and go back and forth looking to see if the photos are good OR we can use a wireless remote control for our cameras. Make sure you know what type of camera they have because the remotes are specific to different brands.

Phone Selfie Light- These ring lights that attach to someone’s phone are great for people that often take selfies for their content. They’re also great for people who do restaurant reviews and don’t want to bring a big flash.

Money Towards Coaching- This is a great gift for someone at any stage of their blogging journey. If they’re serious about making blogging a source of income it can be overwhelming on where to focus. I will start using a coach in January so I don’t have any to recommend right now but it’s a very personal choice so money towards it is your best bet.

New Theme- A theme is the layout of a blog. These can range in price from $0 to $200 but a common price would be $60-$100. It’s not something someone changes often but it can make a big improvement to them when doing the back-end of their work. I’m partial to Angie Makes because I can always get ahold of someone if I need help.

Portable Charger- Running out of battery on your phone, camera or laptop while out on assignment is very frustrating. It’s often difficult to find plugs to recharge. I always bring a small portable charger whenever I’m on assignment and a large portable charger if I go on a trip.

Photo Backdrop- There are a lot of choices for photo backdrops depending on what type of content they do. They may want a white cube for product shots or marble for food photography. You could also make them easily with this tutorial I used for mine.

Light Kit- It is frustrating to not be able to shoot content for your blog because of the weather. Having a basic lighting kit can make working on cloudy days possible.

Backpack- I love my lightweight travel backpack. It has a laptop sleeve as well as room for my DSLR and anything else I would need for a flight or a full day assignment. I’ve used it in Disney World, camping and for work assignments for 3 years. It looks exactly as it did when I bought it.

Surface- It doesn’t need to be a Surface specifically but a thin, lightweight laptop they can easily travel around with.

Planner- Planners are another very personal item that the person may need to choose themselves. Unfortunately, the good ones are often very pricey. Some of my favorites are Golden Coil and Erin Condren.

Changing Tent- A changing tent is a lightweight pop up tent people can use for privacy. Lots of fashion bloggers do wardrobe changes while shooting for the day. This would allow them to change quickly and easily. I’m not familiar with this product, because I am not a fashion blogger, but I know this would be super helpful for someone that is.

Lots of options for the blogger in your life that you want to support. More than gifts, your support is so important for them!

Were you surprised by any of these items as a non-blogger? Bloggers, what did I miss that is crucial to your efficiency as a blogger?

Frozen 2 | My New Favorite Movie

If you know me, you know I’m a huge fan of Disney movies. I am frequently quoting them during conversation.

That being said, saying Frozen 2 is my new favorite Disney movie is HUGE!

We had the chance to preview Frozen 2 before it is being released on November 11/22 through The Owens Group. We took the day to have a full girls day out with lunch, a stop at the book store and a Frozen pedicure before going to see the movie. Of course, Sophia wore her Elsa dress and crown the entire day and felt like the princess she is with all of the compliments she received!

Why Frozen 2 is My Favorite Movie

I will preface this by saying there are zero spoilers in this review. I will also say that the day after seeing it in theaters I booked more tickets for opening night because we NEEDED to share this experience with my husband.

As I sit here, listening to the Frozen 2 soundtrack, I’m reminded of the rollercoaster the movie took us on. I’m a huge fan of the original Frozen film and am happy to watch it sans kids. I love the music, artistry, storyline and comedic relief throughout the movie.

Frozen 2, for me, is all of that times 10.

There is a song that Anna sings called The Next Right Thing that is powerful beyond the movie. The song’s message is what ultimately made Frozen 2 my favorite movie. Anna sings about how things can get difficult but all you can do is the next right thing, one step at a time. I love that message.

The Funniest Frozen

I also love how funny this movie is. Olaf was funny in the first movie but he’s absolutely hysterical in this second movie! My six-year-old and I, along with the entire theater, were belly laughing throughout the entire movie.

Like most Disney movies these days, I do suggest watching the movie first before taking little kids if they’re sensitive to intense movies. It is darker than the first movie. Their goal was to grow with the age of the children who grew up watching Frozen so it’s a bit more mature than the first.

To say ‘this will be the top movie to see over Thanksgiving break’ is an understatement. It’ll likely still be the top movie to see over Christmas. It’s that good. Let me know what you think after you see it! Until then, I’ll be belting Into the Unknown!

Holiday Card Photo Ideas for Families

A huge thank you to Pinhole Press for sponsoring this post, and for making all of my holiday card dreams come true!

Taking photos is more of an obsession than an art form to me. I used to go to the city and take these really cool photos but now I’m proud of myself to get a non-blurry photo of my toddler.

Eyes closed? Who cares?

Since having kids, what I’ve learned, is to pay the photographer. Just pay the photographer once/year to get some family photos that you can be in further than an arm’s length away.

This year we were gifted a family photo shoot from my husband’s parents and I will now ask for a family photo shoot every year. It makes an amazing Birthday or Christmas present to any Mom.

Our photos turned out so adorable that I had a really hard time choosing which ones to add to our Holiday Cards. I pretty much chose the layout from Pinhole Press that has all the photos.

Holiday Card Photo Ideas for Families

It wasn’t so much that our family is super photogenic but rather our photographer got great shots showing our personalities.

For our family, I knew we were going to be shooting photos downtown Indy (buildings and fountains) and this cool building that has walls with lots of different colors. Because we’d have lots of color behind us, I wanted us to wear white to highlight our faces more than our outfits. This worked out amazing because the city shots and nature shots looked equally amazing.

Sophia, Lilly and I all had matching white dresses and Jeffrey was in a simple light blue button-up with khaki pants.

Same Color Scheme

Chose the same color scheme while keeping in mind your background and what you’ll be using your photos for. Do you want fall leaves or the beach as your background for your holiday photos?

You won’t want to choose a bunch of different patterns. Pattern mixing is tricky so keep it to one or two throughout everyone’s outfits.

Examples of ‘mommy and me matching’ on PatPat

We paid for our dresses (the white ones) and this is not sponsored by PatPat but I wanted to share that they have a large selection of Mommy and Me matching outfits for all seasons.

Location

What kind of background do you want for your photos? It’s easy to find staged holiday mini sessions around the city starting early November. These are typically 15-minute sessions where you meet at a studio that is decorated with a holiday theme.

You could also do a more intimate session with something called a lifestyle shoot where a photographer comes to your home and captures your family dynamic in your own home. Think about what would best represent your family in the stage you’re living and go from there.

For us, we love exploring our city so it was fun to do our photoshoot downtown.

Whatever clothes or location you choose for your holiday card photo shoot, keep in mind that you can use these photos in frames to decorate your home and gift them to family members. I made fridge magnets to go in our holiday card envelopes to our close family. They were a super cute touch for those who don’t save holiday cards but want to have a photo of our girls up year-round. PLUS, I got return address stickers this year so my hand won’t fall off writing everyone’s envelopes!

I’d love to know what other Holiday card photo ideas for families you can share.

5 Things I’ve Learned from Jeffrey

Today is Jeffrey and my 9th anniversary. It doesn’t feel like a huge accomplishment that deserves praise because it is so easy being married to him.

Yes, there are definitely things we disagree on but our core values align and that is all that matters in a relationship.

We are opposites in almost every way which seems to work for us. I can’t tell you the amount of times he’s told me I’m talking too loud or that I need to take a deep breath. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve told him that the work will always be there and he needs to hang out with his family. We need each other for these reminders.

Through 9 years we’ve built a home, moved states, had two children, adopted a dog, lost loved ones and shared lots more highs than lows.

5 Things I learned from my husband

In honor of our anniversary I thought it would be fun to share 5 things I’ve learned from Jeffrey.

5 Things I’ve Learned From My Husband

  1. To breathe. For you, it might be simple to remember to breathe but apparently I’m still as bad at it as my 5 year old. He helps remind us to take in a deep breath when we’re frustrated, sad or settling in for a book. Taking a deep breath when transitioning can do amazing things.
  2. I can do it myself. I believe people are innately good at certain skills. Things they pick up super easily. One thing I perceive Jeffrey to be great at is handyman type work. He is good at it because he’s done it a lot and has made lots of mistakes. I learned from him that I am just as capable of doing 95% of the jobs he does, even if that means making the same mistakes.
  3. To slow down. Slowing down takes courage for me. It is much easier for me to take the girls on an adventure out of the house than it is for me to be with them at home. I feel like I need to have an activity or games prepared to occupy them if I’m spending time with them. Whenever I go out and Jeffrey is home with the girls he’s able to just BE with them. I have been focusing on just BEING with the girls more and it’s hard. It’s hard to not feel guilty to read a book when there’s so much I should be doing. He’s helped me see the joy in just being.
  4. To expand my horizons with media. I am happy to listen to the same 10 bands and watch the same 20 movies for the rest of my life BUT there is so much to be gained from trying new things. Metal is even growing on me a tiny bit. I’ll watch a movie that has blood in it now as long as it’s not too brutal. Three movies that have really stood out and spoke to me lately are Tully, Booksmart and Brittany Runs a Marathon. Disney movies are still my jam but trying new things has been really fun.
  5. Scheduling time for each other. This last one I learned more recently and it wasn’t directly from him. I found that for me to be happy in a relationship I need to feel connected to that person. I need to have one on one time with that person to truly know them and have them know me. We were really great at scheduling at least one date night per month this past year and it was something I looked forward to all month. They didn’t have to cost money and once I broke down and realized we needed a consistent sitter everything seemed so much easier. Our dates ranged from go-carting to dinner at a new restaurant to theater performances. My only stipulation was ‘no movies’ because we couldn’t talk and really connect.

I’ve loved sharing these last 9 years married to Jeffrey.
