Summer art camps fill up in January and I’ve got a few lined up for Sophia but I am most excited for her week with LINE+form Atelier! I’ll be working with them this summer in promoting their awesome camps in exchange for Soph to be able to join in the Fairy + Unicorn Camp. In truth, there are several summer camps I’d like to join! Wizarding Camp?!

I love that the emphasis is on the process of creating rather than the product. This lesson is hard for all ages but is important to emphasize in our children. Hopefully being around other creatives will inspire her to take joy in the process as well as the product.

Hoosier Salon Returns to Indiana State Museum

Hoosier Salon returns to Indiana State Museum

INDIANAPOLIS– The annual Hoosier Salon exhibition, featuring artwork from more than 120 Indiana artists, returns to the Indiana State Museum for its 94th run beginning Aug. 3. The competition is Indiana’s longest-running art exhibition and is considered to be the preeminent juried exhibition of Indiana art by Indiana artists. While the art will be on display to the public Aug. 3 through Oct. 14, it will also be for sale – and the bidding begins on Aug. 2 at a special preview event that starts at 6 p.m.

During the preview event, the winners will be announced for this year’s show, and the artwork will officially go on sale. Tickets for the preview event can be purchased online through July 27 athoosiersalon.org.

This year, more than 250 artists applied to the show, including several who are in their 20s, and the show has more young and up-and-coming artists than in previous years.

“The jurors did an excellent job,” said Jim May, executive director of the Hoosier Salon. “In addition to bringing back some long-time participants, 22 of the artists selected are first-timers, helping us to gain ground on our goal of getting new and younger artists from across the state to become members and enter.”

This is the second year back at the Indiana State Museum after a five-year run at the Indiana Historical Society, and the museum is honored to host the show once again.

“We are delighted to partner with the Hoosier Salon again this year at the Indiana State Museum,” said Cathy Ferree, president and CEO of the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites. “The show offers us an opportunity to give visitors access to the best art representing Indiana artists from across the state and around the country.”

In conjunction with the Hoosier Salon exhibition, a kids’ show will be on display in the museum: the Indiana Electric Cooperatives’ Calendar of Student Art Contest. This show features artwork from K-12 students that will be displayed in the cooperative’s annual wall calendar, with a first-place winner selected from each grade to go into the calendar. The winners of the kids’ show will also be announced on Aug. 2 during a 2 p.m. event.

The cost of both shows is included with the purchase of general museum admission, which is free for Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites members.

Bedroom Gallery Wall

Hello Friends! I hope your weekends were exactly what you’d hoped for, whether that be full of exciting events or relaxing at home! We had a great weekend visiting with family, doing a few house projects and taking Sophie to the pool. One of the house projects was a very simple update of replacing our curtain rods with new double rods so we could add sheers in our bedroom. Doing this reminded me that I wanted to post on the small gallery wall I’d made for above our bed.

You know how the bedroom is often the last place you decorate in your home? That was the case in our home as well. Our bedroom is still in the decorating phase but has gotten one step closer by having some art above our expansive vaulted wall that our bed sits against. In order to make the gallery wall a more relaxed feel, I wanted the frames to be hung as well as leaning against the wall held by photo ledges. I picked up two photo ledges at IKEA as well as a few frames. In order to not put extra holes in the wall, I used 3M velcro to hang the frames.

3MVelcroI made templates of each frame with newspaper and moved them around until I got the layout I thought looked the best.

templateNotice the thin strips of newspaper? I even made templates for the photo ledges so I’dknow exactly where to put them. Having the template made hanging the ledge super easy because I held the shelf, held up a level and drilled the screws straight in, making sure to pull out the newspaper before the ledge got flush against the wall.

photo-ledgeI made sure to fill all the frames with art before hanging them to avoid pulling them off the wall. I did a color theme by accident but it worked out really well! The bottom right print is a page of scrapbook paper as a place holder until I can find a piece more suitable. I made the two in the middle on the bottom ledge. The ‘hello love’ was a free printable and the blue floral piece is a tea towel my sister made. I already had the ‘look on the bright side’ print as well as the city print. Just showing it doesn’t cost a lot to make a statement on a wall. Just a few frames (I only bought the two outside grey frames) and photo ledges! Fill with art on hand or make your own!

gallery-wall-closeI like this smaller size of art layered together rather than a full wall of frames. I was tempted to do a full wall but felt it would be too busy and encroaching for a bedroom.

gallery-wallSo there’s my little addition to decorating more of our bedroom. Next stop: wall sconces for reading! In the earlier photos, you can see the old curtain rods and lamps we used to have on our nightstands. If you’re interested, here’s the list of where we got items from this shot of our bedroom:

  • Curtains and teal pillow: Pier1
  • Sheers: Target
  • Curtain Rods and Pullbacks: Lowes
  • Grey Pillows, Nightstands and Frames: IKEA
  • Duvet Cover: West Elm
  • Headboard: DiY

What do you have above your bed? Is it a piece of art that is calming or energizing? What about on the other walls in your room? I like to fill every space of wall with art but in the bedroom I’m sorta liking seeing some wall space.

All Things Creative and Beautiful

Hello and a Happy Friday to you!! I’ve had a great week filled with a little crafting, sunshine and being in awe of my little crawler. It’s amazing how quickly babies learn! It took her one week to be a master crawler and is now set on learning to walk. Anchoring furniture and cleaning baseboards are on the list for this weekend! 😉 For now, let’s go be inspired by all things creative and beautiful!

friday finds 5.30

  1. I really loved the reading chain idea that the girls at eighteen25 wrote about in their Summer Activities post. Our little one isn’t old enough to start reading books on her own but I really think instilling the love of reading at a young age is extremely important. This is a great way to get kids excited about reading over summer break! PS. Reading Rainbow is coming back! (I hope I got that song in your head!)
  2. Ash at Sugar and cloth made this darling succulent wall for her back yard. I love the glossy stained wood for her yard but it might be cute to paint it a Robin’s Egg blue or Mustard yellow. You could also use spray painted food containers or tin cans as the vases as long as you drilled a few holes in the bottom. I love succulents because they’re so easy to care for and most of mine last outside during the winter.
  3. The ladies at Be Crafty made the simplest, yet cutest, garden markers ever! I can even see doing this with your kids but using kid-safe paint and having them write on the forks or later lettering them yourself.
  4. Amy at Delineate Your Dwelling made the most creative piece of art that I’ve seen in a while. Her chalkboard tree stump art has the perfect mix of delicate girlishness and natural texture. I loved her color choice of mint and gold and that this could be applied on any shape or size of wood.
  5. Jen over at i heart organizing has THE most organized home of anyone I’ve ever seen. She has a great way to make her kid’s crafts organized, easily accessible and beautiful. I loved her method for organizing their loom supplies!

These ladies all had great ideas on how to make education and crafting fun and make simple DiY projects to decorate your home. No joke, I want to do every last one of these projects! Has anyone used chalkboard paint for a project? What about making your own garden markers? Did you get the kids involved in your garden this year? For now, I’m happy with watching Soph learn to go from sitting to crawling to standing but I’m also excited for her to read, plant and make crafts with us! 🙂 Hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Happy Glam

geometric art

Although the circle is still my favorite shape, I’m getting really into triangles lately. Things that have especially sparked my interest are:

triangle collage

(Yes, that is a Deathly Hallows necklace in there…back to the post.) I’d recently bought a 5×5 wrapped canvas for my niece and decided that triangles would be the best thing EVER to put on it. I was right.

I started by painting a base coat followed by two coats of gold. I had this tape* waiting to be used for an awesome occasion such as this. I made triangles (with no rhyme or reason) on the canvas with the tape:

gold tape

Once I taped the canvas, I started choosing my colors. This is the hardest and longest portion of any painting I do. This step often paralyzes me from starting a painting because it’s so daunting. I did a lot of mixing to find the exact colors I was looking for and in the end I was quite shocked proud on how well the colors meshed.

paint

I painted several layers of each color to obtain the opacity I was looking for. Peeling the tape off before letting the final coats dry seemed to be a good idea (something I’ve learned by painting the rooms of our house.)

firstpaint

Notice the areas that the paint seeped under the tape? In order to sharpen the lines, I re-taped the outsides with scotch tape and re-painted the gold stripes. If I’d used a stickier tape, this would not have been an issue.

nottapepaint

The final product turned out better than I’d hoped! I named the piece ‘Happy Glam’ for my 2 year old niece who is a very happy little girl who loves glamorous-sparkly-shiny type things.

final1

What projects have you been up to lately? Any shapes been especially inspiring to you? Circles are still in, right?

*I would not recommend this type of tape for this project because it did not adhere to the painted canvas well, which resulted in me having to repaint the gold lines.

Edit: I have since made a second triangle painting! Check HERE for how I improved from this painting.
