First Family Trip to Anna Maria Island

Aside from our Disney trips, Anna Maria Island was my very favorite vacation. The island is so laid back, beautiful and fun for all ages. It was the perfect mix between adventuring and just relaxing by the pool. We’re lucky enough to be able to go every other year so we’re very lucky to be going again in a few weeks to visit my in-laws who are snowbirds!

Anna Maria Island Must-Dos

Pool

You have got to find a place with an awesome pool! We went in February and the beach was super windy so it wasn’t a huge attraction for us. However, the pool was used multiple times per day every single day. Sophia requested breakfast by the pool every morning and promptly took her morning swim after.

I especially loved this pool because it had lush greenery completely surrounding the pool making it feel like our own private oasis!

Beach

Before we started our vacation I had dreams of reading for long hours on the beach like I had on past vacations. What a silly first-time Mom I was. The beach was very windy and chilly so we didn’t lounge out at the beach. The beach was for finding shells, stomping on sand castles and running away screaming from the waves.

We made sure to be down at the beach right after dinner to see the sunsets though. They were perfection. There are several beaches on Anna Maria Island. The rental we visited was a block away from a private beach which was really nice because it was empty! We also visited a few public beaches and even had dinner with our toes in the sand. Watch out, the drinks are delicious and strong!

The Sandbar Restaurant

Nearby Attractions

Marie Selby Botanical Gardens

The Marie Selby Botanical Gardens were my favorite attraction on this trip. Words do not do the gardens justice. Everywhere I looked I was enamored by the beautiful flora that surrounded me. We also spent quite a bit of time doing fun kid activities like their giant tree house. It is such a nice place to spend an entire day. They have a food court but I suggest bringing a picnic and blanket and finding a spot on the open lawn for lunch.

The Anna Maria City Pier

We had the chance to go see the pier before it had been damaged by Hurricane Irma in 2017. The city is working to rebuild it now, even stronger than before with a 3.2 million dollar upgrade. We walked along the pier looking at all the names carved into the planks, beautiful birds perched on the dock and men fishing in the water. Of course we had to stop for ice cream right across from the pier. You can never have too much ice cream on vacation. Speaking of treats, there’s also a ‘make your own donut’ shop in town called The Donut Experiment, that was really fun to try out.

The Donut Experiment

Sarasota Jungle Gardens

Not far from Anna Maria is an awesome opportunity to feed flamingos out of your hands! The Sarasota Jungle Gardens were so beautiful and had lots of really cool animals. We really enjoyed feeding the flamingos and watching their bird show.

Needless to say, I’m giddy about our trip back to Anna Maria Island next week. I’m not sure if I’m most excited to be in the warm sunshine, take Lilly to the beach for the first time or see Sophia run back to the ocean she’s missed so much.

If you’ve been to Anna Maria Island, what are some of your favorite attractions or restaurants? This time we’re renewing our vows on the beach on Valentine’s Day and going to Magic Kingdom for a day. Next week will go too fast!

Loving Our Hearts at Goldfish Swim School

**This post is sponsored by Goldfish Swim School, though all opinions are my own.

Loving Our Hearts at Goldfish Swim School- Sometimes it feels like I’m always nagging our daughter to do things. Because she is only five, she needs lots of reminders. Thankfully healthy habits aren’t something I need to remind her about because she’s constantly dancing or skipping or begging to play outside. However, in the midwest, it’s difficult to get outside everyday which is why I signed her up for swimming lessons at Goldfish Swim School.

Goldfish Swim School practices Heart Health month February DIY Mama
We LOVE Goldfish Swim School

February is Heart Health Month and we’ve been very focused on moving our bodies. We all relate February to groundhogs, presidents and love but having healthy hearts should be at the top of that list.

I want to give you three reasons we LOVE swimming at Goldfish Swim School

3 Reasons We Love Swimming

Safety- Our top reason for enrolling both daughters in swimming lessons is the comfort we’ll have in knowing they’ll know how to save their selves if they fall in water. Serious damage can happen in a matter of minutes to someone who doesn’t know how to swim. During the summer months we spend more time in and around water: on the beach, on the boat, at the pool or lake; we wanted to get a head start on our safe swimming skills.

Friendship- It’s hard to make friends, especially when you’re home-schooled. Our five year old has never met a stranger and makes friends easily when we’re out adventuring. I love that with Goldfish Swim School she sees the same friends each week so she can have a stronger bond with kids her age.

Fun- swimming is fun exercise! It’s great for all ages because it’s low impact and reduces stress. At Goldfish Swim School kids can start swimming as early as four months. I’m able to take both girls and also get a little time in the pool myself with my six month old. They’re both learning critical skills while having fun at the same time!

If you’re considering swim lessons for your child, please feel free to ask me any questions! I would not promote Goldfish Swim School if I didn’t love what they teach my girls.

Your first visit as a member you’ll receive these awesome gifts! You will also receive a Tshirt or Swim Diaper depending on the age of your child.

***

We offer swimming lessons for kids ages 4 months and older, our own Swim Force swim team, Family Swim time for the entire family, week-long Jump Start Clinics and Open Swim times. Find a location near you and sign up for swimming lessons today! On the fence? Our WOW! customer service, 90-degree pool water and atmosphere will help you decide.

I love that the emphasis is on the process of creating rather than the product. This lesson is hard for all ages but is important to emphasize in our children. Hopefully being around other creatives will inspire her to take joy in the process as well as the product.

Color of Style at the Indiana State Museum

This March, visitors will explore style through the lens of color in a new experience at the Indiana State Museum: Color of Style

color of style at indiana state museum- DIY MAMA

Whether people think about it or not, who we are shapes how we dress – and the colors that we choose to wear. This new experience will showcase more than 50 outfits from the museum’s historic clothing and costume collection, including everyday wear from the 1800s, a party dress from the 1920s, an outfit from the Jackson 5, and incredible pieces from iconic Hoosier designers Stephen Sprouse and Bill Blass.

“Color of Style is an opportunity for visitors to see how amazing our collection of historic clothing is,” said Meghan Smith, curator of the exhibit. “Featuring everything from high fashion gowns to homemade baby clothes, this experience gives our visitors a chance to engage with the collection and remember their own fashion histories.”

From the start, the experience will immerse visitors in color. They will wind their way through a color tunnel on their way into the exhibit, then take a quiz to discover which color best represents them. Inside the experience, nine fashion pods will feature outfits from different decades and even centuries, divided by their colors: red, yellow, blue, green, orange, purple, pink, white and black.

Visitors of all ages can get creative in the Style Studio, where they’ll sketch their own unique fashions, soak in ideas from inspiration boards and create their own patterns to show off. Elsewhere in the exhibit, visitors can cast votes to determine “Who wore it better?” for various iconic fashions, try on colorful accessories and pose on the cover of a magazine, and more.

While the experience looks at the evolution of color choices and style over time, modern-day Hoosier designers will also be featured in special videos, including textile artist Kate Ellis, artist and indigo dyer Rowland Rickets, and up-and-coming fashion designer Yemisi Sanni. Plus, fashions and personal stories from real, everyday people will be shared within the experience itself, alongside the museum collection’s pieces.

“This new experience allows visitors to explore their own sense of style and think about how they associate different colors with themselves or others,” said Cathy Ferree, president and CEO of the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites. “Visitors have a chance to explore the stories of Hoosiers throughout time and engage in self-exploration and creativity throughout the experience.”

Color of Style will be at the Indiana State Museum from March 16 through July 28, and entry is included with purchase of general museum admission. This experience is supported in part by the Arts Council of Indianapolis and the City of Indianapolis.
