The Queen Reins at Medieval Times

Let the tournament begin! There’s a new Queen in charge at the Medieval Times in Chicagoland!

Our first stop on our ‘One Tank Trip’ this year was Medieval Times in Schaumburg, IL. Medieval Times was gracious enough to host us when we’d told them how excited we were to see the new queen in charge at their location. We’ve been subtly (and not so subtly) pointing out women in leadership roles to Sophia and knew this would also be a fun family outing to kick off Spring! We love Medieval Times (we even went for one of our anniversaries)!

Family Fun at Medieval Times

When you go, I highly suggest upgrading to VIP status. It allows you to sit in preferred front row seating and you get a snazzy cheering banner for your knight. We had an amazingly close up view of all the knights and horses and had special preference over the rest of the cheering section. Let’s just say a four year old little girl has her first crush on the Blue Knight after receiving a yellow flower (“He kissed it Mommy!”) and a sash marking her as the Blue Knight’s Queen of the Tournament. It was definitely the highlight of our trip! You’re also able to pay a couple dollars extra per person for a tour of the dungeons before the show begins but it is not suggested for children (or weak stomachs like mine). Before the show we did get a chance to buy a Queen’s crown for Sophia and stop by to see the horses while they were having a snack. You also have the opportunity before and after the show to get family portraits with members of the tournament or to be knighted by the Queen herself.

Besides the thrill of knights jousting on horses and a hawk flying just inches over your head, you’ll be surprised by the quality of the feast for dinner. With an appetizer of Dragon’s Blood (tomato soup) to start you off, you quickly see a theme of eating a meal of various parts of a dragon (with no utensils)! The serving wenches are incredibly helpful and are as much a part of the show as the men and women in the tournament.

What’s Happening at Medieval Times

In a major break from Medieval Times’ 34-year tradition of casting a king in the show’s lead role, the company has revealed that a queen is now in charge and sole ruler of the land. She is cast as a firm but kind ruler respected throughout the kingdom who inherited the throne at the passing of her father, the previous king.

“Where previously our female characters played in more supportive roles, we are now showing a woman fully in charge, a woman whose authority is sometimes challenged, but she quickly rises to the occasion as a strong leader, squelching opposition,” says Leigh Cordner, Medieval Times show director.

Jousting, fighting, horsemanship, swordplay and a fresh, hot, four-course feast remain central elements of the dinner attraction. With the cast and script change come a series of other significant changes to the show:

  • More than 700 new costumes for all nine castles’ performers including horses, all of which are custom-designed and hand-made at a dedicated costume shop near Dallas Design District.
  • 200 new suits of armor, shields, and helmets, all of which are custom-designed and hand-made at a dedicated armory in Florida.
  • More than 350 team members and 225 horses train and rehearse new lines and fight scenes for three months while still presenting the current show.
  • It takes two months to teach a queen to ride an Andalusian stallion.
  • New music was composed by Dr. Daniel May, composer and jazz pianist who scored “Everest” and other films and who worked with Sting, The Moody Blues and others. He directed and recorded Medieval Times’ new show composition in Kiev with the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine. He directed the choir in Ukraine with lyrics written by poet and choir member Solomia Gorokhivska, and a solo cellist and violin player from Pittsburgh.
  • The audience experiences a live action film score that is precisely synchronized with every element of the show, from lights to fights; jousts to jabs; the Queen’s entry to curtain closings; and more.
  • The sound and light team spends 120 hours programming 300 new music cues and 500 new lighting cues.

Be Legendary at The Sports Legends Experience at The Childrens Museum of Indianapolis

Growing up I dabbled in a few sports. Tried gymnastics and dance as a young kid and stuck with soccer through college but I’d never say I was a super sporty person. I enjoyed being on a team more than the actual skill. My husband was the same. He played some sports as a kid but was more drawn to music through High School and College. Our four year old Sophia, however, seems to be a natural at a few sports come to find out after visiting Riley Children’s Health Sports Legends Experience at the Indianapolis Children’s Museum. She was a natural on the soccer and hockey fields! She was excited that with each sport there was a child sized ball and hoop/goal. There was so much to explore we have to head back to check out the golf, baseball, fitness track and tennis but was very into playing all the other sports. My favorite part of the experience is getting outside as a family to try new skills and a little exercise.

We had the pleasure to join some of our media friends out at the preview before opening to the public Saturday March 17th. I had high expectations of this 7.5 acre exhibit the museum has been working on for over a year. With us being frequent visitors and now as parents of a pre-K student at the school we have been watching the full construction process as it’s progressed. I’m happy to say that the exhibit FAR exceeded our expectations and wishes. With 12 outdoor exhibits and 3 indoor exhibits encompassing physical fitness, sports history and tons of family fun we were blown away and can’t wait to go back!

With a General Admission ticket or membership, each guests can explore and discover…

  • 12 outdoor sports experiences
  • 3 indoor sports exhibits, including the National Art Museum of Sport
  • The 60-foot tall Children’s Museum Guild’s Tree of Sports
  • 5 floors of fun in The Children’s Museum

The 12 outdoor sports experiences include:

  • Soccer
  • Tennis
  • Baseball
  • Tree of Sports (tree house meets jungle gym)
  • Racing
  • Basketball
  • Football
  • Golf
  • Avenue of Champions (The avenue features 16 individuals who have left a significant impression on sports history, who have defied odds, who have given back, and more. To learn how the legends were chosen, read Advisor Skip Berry’s blog.)

A Wrinkle in Time Movie Review| Is it kid friendly?

Disney does it again. A Wrinkle in Time pulled on my heartstrings. There was a 56 year time span between the 1962 published children’s book and the 2018 live-action A Wrinkle in Time film. We’ll share the full breakdown, no spoilers and a few insights on what ages are appropriate to view this film. There is also a download for activity sheets and coloring pages at the end.

Disney's A Wrinkle in Time Movie Review- Is it Kid Friendly? #awrinkleintime

A Wrinkle in Time

When Madeleine L’Engle’s young adult novel “A Wrinkle in Time” was first published in 1962, it became an instant classic. The timeless story of a young girl searching the universe for her father  enchanted countless readers around the world and spawned four additional books featuring the same characters known as L’Engle’s Time Quintet. In 1963 the book was awarded the Newbery Medal (as the most distinctive piece of work in children’s literature for that year), and its popularity has continued to grow since then.

I don’t recall reading A Wrinkle in Time as a child but once I’d seen the trailer I checked it out from the library right away! The story combined several of my favorite genres: YA, sci-fi and Disney. I personal enjoyed the book although it’s not a story I would re-read on my own again. On the other hand, I am excited to read it as a family with our daughter when she’s around 7 or 8.

Why We Took Our Four Year Old

Because there weren’t any reviews yet on the internet to give information on whether it would be appropriate for her, we brought her along to the preview. Our daughter is four and although I knew a large portion of the plot would be lost on her, I thought she would still enjoy the movie overall. She was a big fan of Charles Wallace’s character (played by Deric McCabe) because she assumes he is her age. She was also a fan of all of the beautiful scenery in the various areas of the universe an the cosmic costumes the Mrs’s wore.

Had I seen the movie before she did, I likely would not have had her watch it yet (definitely not in a theater where everything is more intense). If you’ve read the book, you’ll already know about ‘The It’ which is an evil force trying to take over the universe. It’s a dark concept and is portrayed as such in the film graphically. The film is rated PG for ‘thematic elements and some peril’. The ‘some peril’ portion is more suited for children ages 6 or 7+.

Why It’s Great for Kids

Although we won’t be showing this movie to our daughter for another few years, there were some excellent plot points that are amazing to share with your kids. I appreciated the casting of the film with it’s wide range of diversity. If we dig deeper into the story, we also see themes that make great talking points with our kids. Bullying. Broken emotional children. Split family dynamics. Loss. Pain of loss. Discovering our faults. Accepting our brokenness. Proving your self-worth. Trust. Finding the light within. Healing. Forgiveness. So many potential good good good post-movie conversations to be had here, especially with delicate tweens.

Are your kids begging to see A Wrinkle In Time every time they see the trailer or a poster like mine? Disney has been hitting it out of the park with their live action movies lately and this one is no exception.

In the meantime I’m excited to be able to download and print out these adorable Wrinkle In Time Coloring Pages for us– plus there are a couple of bonus activities! Simply CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD the coloring pages today!

Three Ways to Make Being Active Part of Your Routine

Our pup is a picky eater and we’ve spent a lot of time, money and worry on her diet. Rachael Ray products are such a great brand in every other category and we knew her dog food would be the same. Rachael Ray™ Nutrish® Peak™ Wetlands Recipe™ with Chicken, Duck & Pheasant is not only tasty for her but has caused our dog to gain a bit of weight back that she had recently lost. She has never been a big eater but since we switched to Rachael Ray’s Nutrish Peak she now nudges me once her bowl is filled so she can devour it. PEAK is a protein-rich food for dogs with nutrient-dense meats.

Nutrish Peak Dog Food by Rachel Ray

Nutrish Peak Dog Food Rachel Ray

Our pup Lexi always wants to play. She’s a German Shepard Chow Chow mix with lots of enthusiasm and personality. Thankfully we have a 4 year old daughter who is the same energy-wise and they are best friends. We love camping, hiking and playing at the park with them both. Right now I am pregnant so we’ve been doing walks any day the weather allows. My daughter rides her bike and Lexi and I jog behind.

Lexi and our daughter both have so much more energy and strength because of these regular walk/jogs and are always tired at bedtime. Staying active is incredibly important no matter your age or situation (or species). We make taking walks, visits to the park, hiking and camping part of our regular routine to keep active and learn about nature. One way we’re able to keep our dog’s energy up with all this activity is to have a dog food she enjoys and has nutritious ingredients.

Three Ways to Make Being Active Part of Your Routine

1. Family Walks – As the days get longer in the Midwest we will be doing more walks as a family after dinner. For now, my daughter, dog and I go for walks before Daddy gets home. This is a great way to start our habit before the baby comes.
2. Weekend Hikes – We are so very lucky to have beautiful parks all over Indiana. Each of us likes being outside and we hit the trails for fun on the weekends whenever possible. Even better if we find a creek to stomp in!
3. Camping Trips – Our family makes it a point to schedule camp sites with lots of trails several times throughout the year. We have a camper so booking ahead is key but it allows for inexpensive family mini-vacations that makes us all happy.

We added Lexi to our family in 2010 after finding her at the Humane Society. As many others have said, we didn’t save her, she saved us. She is always there for us when we need love or a snuggle and makes us happy every day. We always encourage others to shop at a shelter or rescue for their pets. This is also a big reason why I decided to purchase Nutrish Peak for Lexi.

A portion of proceeds from each sale of Nutrish is donated to The Rachael Ray Foundation, which helps animals in need. Through December 2017, more than $23.5 million dollars have been donated to animal charities and other organizations that do good for animals. The funds are used for food, medical supplies, treatments, and more. Many more animals around the country need help, and through The Rachael Ray Foundation, together we can make a real difference in the lives of many four-legged friends. Check out the Nutrish PEAK website for more information and where to buy this wholesome and delicious product for your dog!

Nutrish Peak Dog Food

We love that Nutrish PEAK dry food for dogs contains 30% high-quality protein and 0% grains, glutens or fillers. If your pup likes wet food, every Nutrish PEAK wet food recipe is made with real chicken, combined with protein–rich duck, beef or lamb for a flavor your dog will love. I purchased Nutrish PEAK at PetSmart and used this coupon for additional savings! PetSmart had Rachel Ray’s pet line in the center aisle as soon as I walked in as well as in the Natural Food section of the dog food aisle. Let me know some activities you like to include to make being active part of your routine!

Fairy Gardens at the Indianapolis Zoo

We have a four year old daughter. That means our home is filled with dress up, wings, crowns, dresses and lots of pink and purple. When we’d heard about the new Fairy Gardens exhibit going on at the Indianapolis Zoo Hilbert Conservatory we strapped on our wings to head over.

The Hilbert Conservatory is one of my favorite places to visit while at the zoo. I love the fresh smell of all the plants and getting inspiration of plants to grow in my home. The fairy gardens were charming. The small details with natural elements were my favorite and have inspired me to create one this summer in our garden. These wonderful gardens were built by the Horticulture Team under curator Scott Sullivan.
