The Perks of Being a Wallflower (Discussion)

Both Lisa and I wanted an easy book for July, so we picked The Perks of Being a Wallflower. To be honest, I didn’t even read it. I have read it and seen the movie multiple times but could not fit it in my schedule with the move. It is a 5/5 read for me though! It’s formatted to be letters from a 15-year-old boy, Charlie, to an unknown recipient. Charlie doesn’t hold anything back from these letters.

I have 3 questions below, and Lisa’s got 3 over on her blog. Feel free to discuss any or all of the questions in the comment section or link-up your post at the bottom. Lisa and I are sharing the same link-up, so you don’t have to enter on both blogs. The linky will close in a week. Alright, let’s get started!

And now, for the discussion. Before I begin, I’ll remind you that there will be spoilers ahead.

1. Describe the book in one word. I would describe The Perks of Being a Wallflower with the word ‘confusing’. In the book, these high schoolers are so confused. Charlie has been confused with his feelings since a young boy regarding his Aunt’s abuse as well as his feelings on her death. Sam has had self-esteem issues and Patrick has been confused about his sexuality and keeping it a secret.

2. Do you agree with Charlie’s friends for completely shutting him out for what he did to Mary Elizabeth? I do not agree with them shutting him out for that long but I think it’s partially because we can see Charlie’s side so clearly. We also know how troubled he is and how much their friendship meant to his stability. We’ve all overreacted with a friend or loved one and treated them too harshly. Hopefully in our situations, nothing bad came of the event. I’ve never felt as completely lost as Charlie did when his friends were upset with him but I can understand his feelings.

3. Were you surprised when you found out why Charlie had such issues with his Aunt?  I was completely shocked and saddened for Charlie and his family. Throughout the book I thought Charlie was so sad about losing his Aunt because he thought it was his fault that she died going to pick up his present. I thought that was the sole reason for him having his mental issues. I thought he had a soft spot for her specifically because of her kindness towards him as well as wanting to protect her from her abusive relationships. I can’t imagine the unresolved frustration his mom will now have towards her sister.

Now, it’s your turn! Answer my questions, ask your own, or start your own discussions. I’ll be responding to comments in the comment section, and you’ll get an email when I (or anyone else) does so. Or, link-up a blog post with your review and/or the answers to these questions. Also be sure to check out Lisa’s discussion questions on her blog. We’re sharing the same linky, so no need to link-up on both blogs.

Remember our August selection is The Princess Bride. We’ll be discussing it on August 28th.

Take Me Out to the Ballgame

I love experiencing baseball games, despite not being interested in the sport of baseball one bit. It’s one of my favorite activities to do in Indianapolis and I wanted to share my love of seeing the Indians with Jeffrey and Sophie.  Getting a hot dog as a kid at the ballpark with my family is such a special memory. I remember getting a baseball signed by Rowdie (the Indian’s mascot) and looking up to him as a celebrity. We took Sophie to her first baseball game last year on our vacation to Oklahoma and it was the highlight of our trip. She absolutely loved it so I was curious to see how she’d like it this year! Baseball

Indians Baseball

Indianapolis has made the games so accessible by making the tickets affordable and the field downtown by museums, restaurants and the canal. The tickets are only $10 in the outfield and you can bring your own blanket and picnic to save even more money. On Friday nights there is a steller firework show after the game and they’re always running promotions on discounts and kids eating free.

We could not have asked for a more perfect summer night. Hot dogs and soft pretzels are our favorite foods so we only packed a couple snacks for Sophie and a blanket. Next time we will also bring pom poms for Sophie to cheer on her team! Having my sister’s family meet us at the game was a blast! We’re currently living with them for three weeks while we close on our new home. I wanted to be sure to take advantage of doing fun events with them while we’re staying at their home and knew a baseball game would be fun for all three girls (1, almost 2 and 5 years old). Even though it was a Thursday night game, I’m glad we got there an hour early to lay out our blanket. The outfield filled up quick with families with kids that Sophie loved playing with. The little girls spent their time dancing to the music, standing at the fence to watch the baseball players and running through the misters to keep cool.

We could not have asked for a better ‘Welcome back to Indy’ event than a summer baseball game with our family. We’ll definitely be going again this summer and taking advantage of a night stroll along the canal. What’s on your summer bucket list?

Enjoy The Little Things

Enjoy the Little Things

Enjoy the little things. Summer is the perfect time to slow down and really appreciate what’s around you. My world has been in limbo for a while and I’m without schedule. I crave routine but I’m kind of enjoying taking it slow and discovering fun things around my new home in Indiana. We’ve spent our days reading at the library, exploring new parks and playing with our family. We’ve also been lucky enough to visit the zoo and attend a baseball game, but my favorite parts are always the little things at the big events. I loved the sun on my cheeks at the baseball game and Sophie’s joy of meeting new friends. My favorite part of the zoo was Sophie making the noises of the animals that we spend so much time reading about. What little things have you been noticing in your life lately?

Let’s DIY

It’s common for bloggers to slow down during the summer months, not post as often because they’re spending more time with their families. All I know is the diy projects rolling through Pinterest are spot on! I’m loving all the creativeness and techniques that people are using this summer. Let’s DIY!

let's diyHere are my favorite craft projects from this week:

  1.  15 Minute Picnic Blanket by Bev
  2. Concrete Stool by Katie
  3. Concrete Tray by Amy
  4. Watercolor Pillows by Kristen
  5. Iron Transfer Tote by Rachel

As all of my crafting materials are boxed up and in another state, I’ll just be dreaming of these projects this weekend. I can easily see switching the water color technique to the tote and trying an iron on transfer on a set of pillows. What are your thoughts? Doing any craft projects this weekend?

Don’t Look Back

Don't look backDon’t look back. That’s not the way you’re going. This might seem repetitive to my last Tuesday Truth but it’s definitely a reoccurring mantra that I must remind myself. Not only is my family moving jobs, we’re moving homes and states! Whenever I find myself getting sad and nostalgic for our current home/town/friends, I have to remember that I’m lucky to have had these memories and there are more amazing memories to be made. It may take a while for me to adjust to our new home but I know it’s the best choice for our family and as soon as I can remember to look forward, I’ll be extremely thankful we moved to Indy.
