Saturdays With Mom

I’m happy to be swapping posts today with the very sweet and wise Jenny from Express Bus Mama! Jenny is a working Mom of two Bug (7) and her doggy Daisy (5). She raises her kids with her husband in Connecticut and shares all things Mom; whether it’s raising her son, making a great cocktail or getting stains out! She’s a wealth of knowledge, but better yet, is extremely personable and a great friend to have in the blogging world (and I’m sure the real world.) 😉 Let’s here what Jenny has to say!

As busy moms, it seems we never have enough time with our kids. Most days it’s cooking, laundry, errands and cleaning. While all these chores are important and necessary, they don’t exactly equal hours of carefree fun. A couple of years ago I realized that if I wanted to have regular, one-on-one time with my son, I would have to make it a part of our weekly schedule.

Saturays
Enter Saturdays With Mom, which have become something of a tradition in my household. We both look forward to our little “dates” and I do my best to make sure they happen on a weekly basis. Saturdays are the ideal day for us because we don’t have to worry about weekday stresses getting in the way of having a great time together. Also, my husband usually works on Saturdays, so it really is perfect timing.

Looking for some Saturday mom and kid date ideas? Here are a few to get you started.
1. Fun Breakfast. It’s always a special treat to go out for breakfast and Saturday is the perfect morning to let someone else do the cooking. When we go out I let my son pick the place. Somehow we always end up going to the same restaurant! Other Saturdays we stay home and eat in our pajamas. That’s when we take the time to make a meal we wouldn’t get to enjoy during the week. Either way, laughing over chocolate chip waffles and scrambled eggs does wonders to melt away the week’s stress.

2. Parking It. It’s no secret that parks are a wonderland for children and parents alike. On Saturdays it’s nice to venture out of neighborhood. Most of us live within twenty minutes of a dozen parks and playgrounds that are just waiting to be explored. I love breaking out a game from my childhood to play with my son; it gives him an opportunity to see me as more than just mom. Also, driving to an unfamiliar park is a great time to teach your children a little local geography. Let them know a little about each town you pass through and quiz them on the way back. The car ride will be a little bit more enjoyable for everyone!

3. Museums for Free. There are at least half a dozen museums in my area that offer free admission on Saturday mornings. Do some quick research and take advantage of any offers in your area. Since taking in an entire art collection can be a little overwhelming for a child, I like to focus on one area or gallery. We each select a couple of pieces to share and discuss. Afterwards, we head home and try our hand at recreating our favorite pieces. The results are always interesting!

4. Visiting Hours. If you’re like me, you’ve got lots of family that you don’t get to see as often as you would like. I like to use one Saturday morning a month to catch up with our grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins or friends. We typically bake something or pickup flowers to bring with us. My son enjoys sharing about his latest adventures and usually leaves these visits with a little token from his relatives. To me these Saturdays are about showing my son the importance of good manners and respecting his elders. Believe it or not, these are some of his favorite outings.
This is just a short list of how we like to spend our Saturdays With Mom. There are fifty-two Saturdays a year; be sure to make the most out of every single one!

I loved Jenny’s use of Saturdays as play dates with her son! Sometimes you have to schedule fun and that’s totally understandable and worth it! I also loved her post to her sister entitled ‘To My Sister, On the Eve of Motherhood.’ I couldn’t agree more with her encouragements for her sister! Go check out Jenny’s site for more awesome posts and see the sweet crayon holder I DiY’d for the little ones in your life!

Bigger Person

My husband told me something that he was told as a kid and has always stuck with him. Be the bigger person. This is very hard for me as an ESFJ! It’s difficult for me to have any type of conflict or confrontation with people and once I do I’d rather write them off than try to work through our problems or be the bigger person. I let conflict eat away at me until I’m sick so I’ve been running my husband’s suggestion through my head to keep myself on the right path.

Busy Bee

Happy Monday! I hope you all had a fun filled weekend with your families! We did some grilling, stopped at the farmer’s market and worked on lots of projects. We’re on a deadline to get our deck finished so it will be ready for staining in a couple of weeks. Because of this deadline, I’ll be taking a week off from blogging. I’ve noticed that with the little bean up for longer periods of time, I’ve not been able to do many projects and I don’t get a break once Daddy comes home because the poor guy goes straight out to work on the deck. I have two big projects that I want to finish this week as well as work on my blog course. I thought it would be better to take a break and feel good about the progress I’ve made rather than to write filler posts. I hope you all have a lovely week and I’ll catch up with you Friday for #AAF!! 🙂

All Things Creative and Beautiful

Hello and a Happy Friday to you!! I’ve had a great week filled with a little crafting, sunshine and being in awe of my little crawler. It’s amazing how quickly babies learn! It took her one week to be a master crawler and is now set on learning to walk. Anchoring furniture and cleaning baseboards are on the list for this weekend! 😉 For now, let’s go be inspired by all things creative and beautiful!

friday finds 5.30

  1. I really loved the reading chain idea that the girls at eighteen25 wrote about in their Summer Activities post. Our little one isn’t old enough to start reading books on her own but I really think instilling the love of reading at a young age is extremely important. This is a great way to get kids excited about reading over summer break! PS. Reading Rainbow is coming back! (I hope I got that song in your head!)
  2. Ash at Sugar and cloth made this darling succulent wall for her back yard. I love the glossy stained wood for her yard but it might be cute to paint it a Robin’s Egg blue or Mustard yellow. You could also use spray painted food containers or tin cans as the vases as long as you drilled a few holes in the bottom. I love succulents because they’re so easy to care for and most of mine last outside during the winter.
  3. The ladies at Be Crafty made the simplest, yet cutest, garden markers ever! I can even see doing this with your kids but using kid-safe paint and having them write on the forks or later lettering them yourself.
  4. Amy at Delineate Your Dwelling made the most creative piece of art that I’ve seen in a while. Her chalkboard tree stump art has the perfect mix of delicate girlishness and natural texture. I loved her color choice of mint and gold and that this could be applied on any shape or size of wood.
  5. Jen over at i heart organizing has THE most organized home of anyone I’ve ever seen. She has a great way to make her kid’s crafts organized, easily accessible and beautiful. I loved her method for organizing their loom supplies!

These ladies all had great ideas on how to make education and crafting fun and make simple DiY projects to decorate your home. No joke, I want to do every last one of these projects! Has anyone used chalkboard paint for a project? What about making your own garden markers? Did you get the kids involved in your garden this year? For now, I’m happy with watching Soph learn to go from sitting to crawling to standing but I’m also excited for her to read, plant and make crafts with us! 🙂 Hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Top Disney Attractions for Adults: Animal Kingdom

Animal Kingdom is the newest and largest park addition to Disney World. It is also the park that I am least familiar with. I have been on every attraction, watched every parade and went on each safari but I still feel I could know the park better. Walt’s dream was to have a park like Animal Kingdom to help people learn about how animals live in their habitats as well as animal conservation. I wish he could, above all else, see Animal Kingdom. He would be proud.

Top Adult Attractions Animal Kingdom

Although Animal Kingdom is the largest of the parks, it’s the only park that I think you can easily see in one day. Typically when we go, we go at opening and are able to spend a half day at the park and finish the day at another park. When we decide which days we’re visiting each park, we check to see which parks have morning or evening extra magic hours to maximize the time available in each park. We always choose Animal Kingdom for the morning extra magic hours to make sure we get some good action with the animals during the Kilimanjaro Safari. We arrive at the park early to make sure we’re at the front of the lines so we can get a Fastpass at Expedition Everest before heading over to the safari.

After watching the gazelles smooch, we head over to the Kali River Rapids to get soaked! We go on this ride at the beginning of the day to make sure we have time to dry off during the day. The lines are also shorter because it’s not as hot in the mornings. The next thing we do is my very favorite attraction in Animal Kingdom as well as my favorite roller coaster in Disney! EVEREST! I was able to test it before it was open to the public because I worked there during that time. I remember the first time I rode it and I still get butterflies thinking about how awesome it was!

After the thrills of Everest we go test our limits by going to Dinoland to ride DINOSAUR! I have to close my eyes at one part so beware! Now that we’ve jump started our tickers, we skip over to see the amazing Tree of Life and It’s Tough to be a Bug 4D inside! The tree is SUCH an amazing sight and I love the Bugs Life show.

Those are the main attractions we enjoy seeing. Depending on how long those took, we’ll watch the parade or go on some of the trails to see the animals. There are REALLY cool exhibits showcasing the animals that shouldn’t be passed up. I’ve been to some wonderful zoos and the Animal Kingdom has them all beat! They started building a Avatar land earlier this year and they’re in the works of putting together a firework show for the park (which would mean longer park hours!) I know they’ve done a lot of testing with the fireworks to see how it would affect the animals and will only go through with it if it’s completely safe and does not bother any of the animals.

Were there any attractions I missed that your family loves seeing?! Who’s been on Everest? Doesn’t it ROCK?! (See what I did there?) 😉 Next week will wrap up my Top Disney Attractions series with attractions for kids at Animal Kingdom. Stay tuned though because I’ll be starting a new series on Top Disney Eats next!
