How to Make Baby Food

Everything is more fun when you do it with someone! I’ve been making Soph’s baby food for at least a month. It’s been easy because she doesn’t eat much per day so it goes a long way once I make her food. She’s starting to eat more though, so I was happy when my friend asked if I wanted to do a day of baby food making. I’d say it was quite easy and efficient!

chop, cook, puree

I took Soph over with me and she did her thang (lots of loud yelling) while we steamed, chopped, baked and pureed our hearts out! It makes me feel proud when I make her food. I’m not against store-bought baby food, we’ve given it to her, but I enjoy saving money while knowing the exact ingredients in the little bean’s food. Also, I have the time and tools to make it so I’d kind of feel bad if I wasn’t making her food. ๐Ÿ˜‰

We made four different meals, two of which, I’d never made. We picked up a bag of spinach, a bag of carrots, three acorn squashes and 4 sweet potatoes. We used an oven, a microwave, a borrowed Beaba babycook, and a Cuisinart food processor. We also have two different methods for freezing and storing. My friend has these trays which stack well and have a lid but are a bit tougher to get the food out. I have these that have no lid (I use foil) but the food pops out easily and you can use them for brownies (their main purpose)!

baby food storage

I really liked making this food with two people because while my friend worked on one food, I would be working on another. First, we cleaned all the vegetables. For the spinach we de-stemmed the leaves, put them in the Beaba to steam and attempted pureeing it in the Beaba. The consistency seemed pretty difficult for our new eaters, it only lasts 3 days in the fridge (you’re not supposed to freeze spinach) and it didn’t make very much for the quantity of leaves we bought. For the carrots we peeled, chopped and steamed them in the Beaba. The Beaba did a good job of steaming the carrots but we weren’t able to fit that many in the container so we had to do two rounds of steaming. We, again, attempted processing the carrots in the Beaba but transferred them to the food processor because we didn’t like the consistency.

For the sweet potatoes we poked them with a knife, wrapped them in foil and put them in the oven at 425F for an hour. Once we pulled them out of the oven we peeled, quartered and threw them into the food processor.

The acorn squash is my favorite food to make because it’s the easiest and yields the most food. We cut the squash from top to bottom, scoop out it’s seeds, put the halves upside down in an inch of water in a glass baking dish, and put it in the microwave for 20 minutes. Once we pull it out of the microwave we scooped out the insides and threw it in the food processor. Most vegetables you could mash well enough with a fork, including the carrots, sweet potatoes and squash, if you didn’t have a food processor.

squash

After splitting everything, We both ended up with two full trays and meals for the fridge for this week. We were happy that we didn’t buy any more food because we wouldn’t have enough freezer storage. We also learned that spinach isn’t worth our effort because of the small amount yielded and that we’d buy a lot more carrots next time. We’ll also be using our steamers next time, rather than the Beaba for steaming because we can do a larger quantity. Next time we’re going to try broccoli, cauliflower and turkey!

Have you pureed your own baby food? What was your favorite methods? What did your babies LOVE to eat?? Be sure to check over at my friend Beth’s site to see how myself and other mommy bloggers make time for ourselves!

Lovin’ Girl Clothes at Target

I went to Target today to see if they had the YHL line yet. They didn’t and knew nothing about it or when it would be coming. ๐Ÿ™ I was sad but at least I had found a gold geometric Nate Berkus lamp base for $27 down from $55 and a candle that was divine. Unfortunately, I did not have my credit card! I only had a Target gift card and a TON of quarters that I use for the parking meters. Do not fear, I was able to get the lamp base! ๐Ÿ™‚ But no YHL hooks, lamp shade or divine candle. Needless to say, my Target trip was a rollercoaster of emotion. I DID, however, get super swoony over the little girl’s spring clothes that are popping up at Target!

The actual dresses were cute too but I was OBSESSED with these patterns! I was super tempted to buy them for Soph even though they’re too big! Hopefully they’ll still be around when they go on sale. These are some of the clothes I would TOTALLY buy Sophie…if I hadn’t just bought her clothes at an outlet mall. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Anyone else shop for their girl clothes at Target? I need some new places to get little girl clothes. Our Target doesn’t have a very large clothing section and it’s too expensive to buy online. I’ve been to Kohl’s but it’s pretty slim pickings there too. The outlet mall I mentioned has a Carter’s, Baby Gap and Oshkosh but I’m pretty sure they’re no cheaper than the regular stores. Oshkosh had clearance pants for $16?! Where do you guys shop? Do you use coupons? I’m going to go wake her up to dress her up now…I wish.

Baby Books

baby books

I need a better way to document the little bean. She is now 6 months and I follow her around like the paparazzi. I’m realizing I need to do a better job of displaying and organizing her photos. I currently have a family album for 2013, two baby books and a Smash Book of her. Did I mention she’s only been alive for 6 months? I need to simmer down.

I like having two baby books for her so I can give one to her if she is ever interested. They also have different questions, so there’s hardly any repeated info between the two. In these books I’ve kept her shower invite, sonogram, growth chart, doctor visits, firsts and there’s room for her first 5 bday pictures.

2 books

I make our family albums through Shutterfly, after the new year, when there are major discounts. The books usually are still in the range of $50-$70, which I think is a lot, but I think having those memories documented is important. Two tips about Shutterfly I’ve learned over the years: If you get a coupon in the mail that expires in a few weeks/months, sign in to add the code and it will save it for whenever you make your album. Also, if you buy a premium background, you can use boarders, stickers and layouts from ALL of the different themes. So you might pay an extra $3 for a specific theme but get access to everything. Warning: this makes the project take about 10 times longer since there are more options. ๐Ÿ˜‰ I also like making books online, opposed to scrapbooking, for albums of kids because if Grandma wants a copy, it’s much easier and faster to duplicate.

*Shutterfly does a good job of the quality of photos in the books. The picture on the left should not have been put in this 12×12 book because it was taken with my iPhone in a dark room…but I wanted it in there so don’t judge the quality by this shot.

photo album

I LOVE Smashbook because it’s a simplified version of scrap booking. I feel like it’s more organic. I don’t take as much time making sure pictures and colors go well together on each spread, but rather that all the photos are in order and put in the book. It’s more about having a book of photos to flip through that has a bit of embellishment rather than a full story like in a scrap book.

smash book

The bad thing about Smashing is the mess. Like scrapping, you can have as little or as many embellishments as you want. In my case, I use a LOT less when I smash but it still takes up a lot of space, as you may remember me mentioning here.

smashing

I was hoping this post would help me realize what method of baby books I liked most but it just made me want to work on my Smashbook. ๐Ÿ˜‰ What’s your favorite version of a baby book? Do you like any photo companies better than Shutterfly? I’ve tried Snapfish and Tiny prints but still like Shutterfly better. Did you keep up with a baby book for your second child? I feel like it would be hard to do! If you have any posts or suggestions for ways to document baby memories, link them up, I wanna see!

Our Silly Sophie

This post is purely for my own benefit. It may make you smile or say ‘awwe, I remember when my baby did that!’ or ‘I wish my baby was still small enough to snuggle’ but basically it is for my own amusement. ๐Ÿ™‚ Here are some of the silly things that Soph does that makes us say ‘how did we get so lucky?’

Sophie LOVES smiling. Mostly at herself whenever she spots herself in a mirror or the iPhone. She also gets super excited and kicks her legs whenever she hears Frozen’s ‘Let it Go.’

smiles

She also loves her big furry sister, Lexi. Her favorite things are rubbing her feet on her fur and biting her face.

sophielexi

Soph is a very talented girl in our eyes! Already drinking from cups and blogging with Mommy.

talent

I love when she gets sleepy. She has a lot of normal signs like rubbing eyes or monotone murmuring. The more unique things that tell us she’s definitely sleepy is that she has one eye that gets smaller than the other.

sleepy

From her Daddy, she learned her love of reading and really studies each page.

reading

The biggest reason we love our silly Sophie is because she already has such a personality. She’s mostly happy but she’s also very independent and inquisitive.

facesI hope you enjoyed a sneak peak into our little bean. I’m just so proud and thankful to have her in our lives. Now if I could just get her to stay awake all the time and let me kiss those cheeks!!

Keeping Baby Clothes Organized

Organize Baby Clothes

I love organizing. It’s super calming for me and I think there is a direct correlation between the organization of my home and my brain. I have been organizing baby clothes for 5 months now, which sounds like a ridiculously short amount of time for any other project but it has been a CONSTANT organizational nightmare. I tend to search Pinterest if I don’t have the PERFECT way of organizing a ‘situation’ (for lack of better words.) I round up a bunch of favorite ways to accomplish my project and then usually mix and match people’s ideas to fit our space/needs. With this situation I have been re-doing her clothes every few weeks! Partially because she’s been going through them so quickly, partially because when my husband helps and puts clothes away he does it his way, and partially because I can’t figure out a wonderful, fabulous, perfect way to keep everything in order.

Let’s just dive in here and you can see the layout of the room as well as how I organize her clothes. I want to preface with the fact that I did not straighten up or organize anything for better photo ops so you could see the organization in it’s natural state.

This is what you see as you walk into her room. The dream catcher was made by Mommy to make sure she has happy dreams. I used this as my inspiration.enter1If you turn left, you’ll see her crib wall. Her mobile was also made by me. Her Sophia bunting (suuuper cute, right?) was made by this lovely lady.

Here is a closeup of what’s going on inside her crib. The rings hang with a little ducky high up on her crib so we can scoot her up there for play time. There is an elephant mirror for her to see herself in as well as her best friend Elmer. Her peacock is in there when she plays and wants a bit more stimulation but usually he is her traveling buddy. The bumper is bumpy so she loves waking up and feeling it.

babycrib

Next is the wall with her friends and reading chair. We put up shelves with toys from our past as well as artwork from loved ones. It also holds her monitor and above is her camera. The city print is from IKEA as are the turquoise cart and yellow side table (which has a drawer for quick access of her pacifier, toy, and tissues.) We use this glider for reading and her 5a feeding to help keep her calm.

shelves

Turn again and you’ll see her changing table/dresser. The yellow curtains plus wood slatted blinds help with daytime naps. The art print is from Katie and is a nod to our wedding song. Her coat rack holds her jackets and carrier and underneath is her hamper (of which I do not recommend as a hamper because of the flaps. It would be better used as a storage bin for a child to learn to put away their stuffed toys.)

dresserwall1

Finally you’ll see her closet (which holds a ton of crap stuff ranging from kitchen platters to luggage to her extensive library.) We hang her packed diaper bag on the door to make it easy to grab and go. Both frames are from her family baby showers and my best friend made her bunting.

closetwall1

The room seems quite full to me but every time I try to minimalize this space it just fills up again with new toys. Her closet only holds sets of clothes on hangers that are gifts and don’t yet fit her, otherwise all clothes are in her dresser or the pink tub by her dresser (where I throw small clothes to later organize and store or share.)

This is the top left drawer which is right under her changing pad. It holds Sophie’s swaddle sleeper, muslin blankets, burp cloths and bibs.

TL1

The top right drawer is super easy to access when changing Soph. It contains her night and day diapers (Pampers are our favorite), socks (Circo long white with grippies are our favorite), hats, foot and arm toys, headbands and misc medical supplies.

TR1

The middle left drawer holds her pants (rolled so I can easily see them), PJs, snugly outfits and shirts/dresses that are part of a set.

ML1

The middle right drawer has short sleeved onesies, sweaters and long sleeved onesies that are easy to see as well as put away once folded.

MR1

The bottom left drawer holds all of her clothes in the next size up as well as her swimsuits and cover ups. All of these clothes are borrowed or bought at a consignment store and I’ve pre-washed so they’re ready once she fits in them. It’s quite haphazard but it’s easy to just throw stuff in once it’s washed and re-organize it once I move them up a row to her current clothes.

BL1

The bottom right drawer is her ‘fancy’ drawer. It is filled with the clothes that have been hand made for her by relatives. The majority of this drawer is clothes made for her by my Grandma June when I was 15 (and no where near wanting children.) I wish she could see Sophie in them now. She would want to bite her cheeks! This drawer is also pretty crazy because when I want to play dress up there’s limited time to rummage through and pick something out before Soph doesn’t want to play anymore.

BR1

Sidenote: this is what the little bean was doing while I was snapping these pics before her nap. So sweet and patient.

patient1

The top of the dresser has our essentials that are handy to have nearby during changes. Obviously her changing pad, wipes container (one of my favorite purchases), sanitizer, Aquaphor, baby powder, baby lotion, pacifier, q-tips, distracting toy, vaseline, freshner and a lamp (for the big messes.)

supplies

That sums up the major pieces in the nursery. While looking at this I realize how much STUFF comes along with having a new baby (not that it’s all necessary but it makes life easier!) I go back and forth between feeling ok with the way it’s organized and thinking it’s a total mess. Do you have any of these products? Do you have any suggestions on how to keep things more organized? How do you do it???
