Beautiful Garden Half Bathroom Renovation

This post is sponsored by Photowall. The Blue Lily wallpaper was gifted in exchange for this post. As always, I only work with companies that I have previously used as a product. We used and loved Photowall wallpaper in Lilly’s preschool Montessori bedroom.

After a year of staring at the walls in my home, I started to get the itch to completely re-do every space. I’ve already done all the decluttering and cleaning projects and now I’m wanting more color and pattern! This past year, gardening as a hobby, brought me the most joy. I wanted to bring more plants and flowers inside. Especially to get rid of the grey winter blues, I needed to bring my garden inside! Que the birds chirping, sun shining and butterflies flittering around. That’s what my new bathroom is!

Photowall Wallpaper is Beautiful

As I mentioned I used Photowall for our daughter’s room and LOVED the product. (You can get 25% off your order of anything on the site until the end of May with code DIYMAMA25). Previously, we wallpapered one wall, ceiling to floor and it was gloriously easy. This time around, we had many obstacles. ‘It’ll be a super easy glow up’ I said. ‘It’s such a small room, what could go wrong?’ We learned a few things about how walls are never even but it’s nothing a little crown molding won’t fix.

Because it is a small half bath (like really small), I wanted wallpaper on top with a board and batten on the bottom. This is a great way to save money on wallpaper. We easily ordered the wallpaper on Photowall.com by putting the dimensions we needed (measure the wall’s height and width and add 6 inches both ways for error). Despite Photowall being in Sweden (across the globe from the US), the wallpaper was on my doorstep a few days after I put the order in!

There were 12 steps to this bathroom renovation of adding wallpaper and board and batten. I want to remind you that this was not the first time I’ve assisted in helping put up wallpaper or board and batten BUT it’s the first time I did 95% of the project on my own.

The 12 Steps to Our Bathroom Renovation

  1. Remove everything from the walls- this includes a toilet paper holder, towel ring, mirror, and any art or shelving you may have hung in the bathroom. I left up the light fixture until I needed to wallpaper that section.
  2. Determine where you want your board and batten- We have an 8 ft ceiling in this room and I knew I wanted more white board and batten than wallpaper. The room is small and I didn’t want it to feel smaller with the pattern of the wallpaper. Once I found the height of the board and batten I drew a horizontal line around the room.
  3. Draw a vertical line the width of your first wallpaper panel- determine which corner you want to start at and draw a line to the ceiling the width of your panel. I knew I didn’t want a noticeable line where the end of the wallpaper meets up with the beginning of the wallpaper. I wanted that to be on the smallest part of the room which was over the doorframe. I started wallpapering with panel 5 in order to have panel 1 start over the door.
  4. Paint on wallpaper paste- you’ll want to fill in the area within your vertical line plus a couple inches past the line. It’s better to have too much paste than too little. If you miss a spot it could cause a bubble, whereas you can push out excess paste if there’s too much.
  5. Add wallpaper panels- line up the panel with the one to its left and continue around the room.
  6. Remove trim- I removed all trim around the door and the baseboards. Because we were adding board and batten I knew I wouldn’t need the baseboards.
  7. Trim excess wallpaper- use a wallpaper ledge (or any long ledge) to help guide a box knife to cut along the initial horizontal line. This will be where the top horizontal piece of the board and batten will be.
  8. Paint, cut, and add baseboards- this was the hardest part for me. Figuring out how the angles needed to be cut for the baseboard trim was confusing. We have an angled wall and I needed lots of help figuring this out.
  9. Paint, cut, and add vertical board and batten- using liquid nails and a nail gun I added the vertical pieces of board and batten.
  10. Paint the board and batten- once all of the board and batten are up you can paint the walls for the board and batten look.
  11. Caulk and fill nail holes- here is another place I learned a valuable lesson. Be sure to use paintable caulk when sealing your seams. I just used some random white caulk we had on hand that apparently repels paint. I had to go back over all the seams with paintable caulk before painting again. I also filled all the nail holes with wood putty. Touch up the nail holes once the wood putty is dry.
  12. Add decor- here’s the fun part! Add back all the decor you took down and admire your newly renovated bathroom!
Bathroom renovation with wallpaper and board and batten

I made a video tutorial of how I put up the wallpaper as well as the board and batten. There are tons of great detailed videos on how to add your Photowall wallpaper if you need more tips. Below is the video I put together of the steps I took to renovate our bathroom.

I’m really proud of how well the bathroom turned out. When I first told my family I wanted to re-do the bathroom (after we already painted and changed out the vanity) they were not looking forward to it. My daughter didn’t like any of the wallpapers I’d chosen and my husband was worried that he’d end up doing the project. Thankfully in the end, everyone was happy and now I can go in my garden bathroom anytime I need the feeling of spring!

A Super(hero) Back to School

This post has been sponsored by Marvel. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Superhero Back-to-School- Our daughter starts kindergarten in three weeks. I am a pool of tears already and can’t imagine what I’ll be like as she walks up the steps of the bus. One thing that keeps my nerves calm is knowing how confident she will be in school. SHE is my superhero.

Check out all the amazing Marvel Back-to-School products at Dollar General!

As a Mom, there is so much to worry about with your kids. Thankfully, my daughter’s ability to excel in school and buying school supplies are not of worry to me. As a kid, I remember going to pick out new school supplies with my Mom and coming home to lay it all out to show my Dad. Brand new boxes of crayons and colorful folders sprawled across the family room floor.

I was so excited to take our daughter back-to-school shopping at Dollar General and get everything we needed. It was so easy to find everything we needed from our supply list with the school supplies in one aisle. Of course, our daughter went straight for the Marvel superheroes! She’s never seen the movies but loves the comics and story lines of these men and women who save the world! Plus, Dollar General has an app for great coupons.

Girls Love Superheros, Too

In her eyes, she doesn’t want to be a doctor or lawyer when she grows up; she wants to be a superhero! We teach a lot of lessons from the Marvel superheroes she looks up to, like “always get back up” (Spider-Man) and “girls are strong” (Captain Marvel and Black Widow). When we saw how many different superhero products there were for such a great price at Dollar General, we kind of got it all.

Some of our favorite Marvel products at Dollar General:

-Spider-Man and Thor Lego sets
-Spider-Man T-shirt and mask
-Marvel coloring books, jumbo sticker books and travel stamp book
-Marvel backpack and lunch box

The Lego sets are her favorite so far, but she really loved being able to take the activity books on our road trip to Grandma’s house. She was even inspired to get her Dad a Spider-Man shirt for his birthday because she wanted to have a matching shirt with him. I love that the Marvel universe brings all of us together as a family.

WARNING: CHOKING HAZARD- Small parts will be generated. Not for children under 3 years.

xZooberance Festival Debuting at the Indianapolis Zoo

We’re so excited about Spring just around the corner and one of our favorite spring adventures is to head to the Indianapolis Zoo. The weather is perfect for playful animals and low crowds. This year they’ve got a fun festival in store called xZooberance that we’ll be checking out this weekend! Here are the details:

xZooberance

Debuting just in time for spring break, the Indianapolis Zoo’s brand-new festival begins March 21 and continues every Thursday through Sunday until April 7. The Zoo will be open 9am-5pm with event activities running from 10am-4pm. The cheerful spirit of the season will shine throughout the Bicentennial Pavilion, where oversized pinwheels spin in the breeze and brightly colored kites float overhead. Amid a vibrant landscape filled with larger animal-shaped topiaries and a living wall of plant life, visitors can enjoy continuous live entertainment with a changing lineup for all 12 days.

Music headliner Hiss Golden Messenger will bring their unique blend of folk, country and rock music to the main stage at 6pm March 30, with the Jai Baker 3 opening at 5pm. The Zoo will stay open late for this special concert so that guests can dance into the evening hours.

Additionally, the festival main stage will host local acts like Dance Kaleidoscope, Dumpster Drummers, Cathy Morris and more. At The Perch, guests can interact with storytellers, meet chickens, learn about nature and create their own musical sounds.

Food & Beverage

Nearby in the Cheer Garden, guests can unwind and sample specialty food items, like Bavarian pretzels, kettle chips and picnic snacks, plus craft beer, wine and kid-friendly refreshments. Extra activities like animal-inspired yoga and a sculpture scavenger hunt will have guests moving all over the Zoo. Children will enjoy making a beautiful pinwheel craft, and guests can even create spring-themed enrichment for the Zoo’s animals.

Adding xZOOberance in with moderate seasonal temperatures, active animals and the return of the Zoo’s seasonal exhibit, Butterfly Kaleidoscope presented by Citizens Energy Group, makes spring an ideal time of year to visit the Zoo. Plus, xZOOberance attendees will be among the first to experience the new dolphin presentation, which introduces audiences to the Zoo’s pod as well as Central Indiana families who are taking simple steps to help dolphins in the wild.

Best of all, xZOOberance as well as the other exhibits and activities are all free for Zoo members and included with regular admission. Guests are encouraged to save time and money by planning their visit in advance at IndianapolisZoo.com

10 Projects for 2018

Each January I post a word or my goals at the beginning of the year to share with you what I’ll be working on. I share these aspirations to help me be accountable and to help trigger ideas for you. Last year I was not in a good place to set any goals because I was overwhelmed with my pregnancy. I focused more on how to keep myself out of a funk and to keep trekking through 2018.

Now that I’ve had Lilly and are out of the sleepless newborn phase, I’m ready to hit the ground running. I wanted to share some of my thoughts for the year ahead.

Projects for 2018

I listened to Miranda Anderson’s Live Free Creative Co Podcast on planning for the year ahead. I loved how she gets ready for the year ahead. She talks about how she sits down with her husband and writes down all of their big trips and then plans other projects around those. For us, we’re more in the house updating phase of our lives while our girls are little. We’ll plan our trips around our projects.

Trips in 2018

We already have a few trips planned. In February we’re heading to the beach with a surprise day trip to Disney World. *I get butterflies as I write that!* I’m also planning an adult-only trip to Cedar Point to re-do a previous failed Cedar Point trip we took several years ago. (Never go on the twirly rides as your very first ride. You may get so sick that you can’t go on any more rides.) We’re also doing one date night/month exploring our city and doing things we’ve not done (like go cart racing). We’ll also be continuing our one play a month through Indianapolis Broadway.

Our year already seems pretty full of fun but you can’t play without work. We’ll be doing some pretty major projects as well this year.

Projects for 2018

10 Projects for 2018

  1. Starting a medical weight loss program through my doctor’s office.
  2. Creating a course that I’ll teach locally and eventually sell on my blog.
  3. Building a new deck.
  4. Painting our home and updating the porch to match the roof being put on in Spring.
  5. Switching out our sliding glass door.
  6. Building a built-in bookshelf that will surround a piano in the library.
  7. Painting two vanities and all of the base boards in the house.
  8. Pitching to 5 new companies for vacations or lessons for Sophia.
  9. Doing more video work in preparation for Disney Creator Days 2019.
  10. Continuing working on my mental stability. I started taking CBD oil and I’m not sure if it’s working. I’m extremely aware of my impatience with my family and my high anxiety when it comes to clutter. Figuring out a happy medium of working out/meditating/CBD/self love.

I’d love to hear what kinds of projects you have on the docket for 2018!

8 Tips on Hosting the Perfect Thanksgiving

Tips on Hosting the Perfect Thanksgiving- Hosting family and friends for the holidays is daunting. The expectations of a Pinterest worthy meal and decor is high. We’ve lost what the true meaning of Thanksgiving is. In our family, Thanksgiving was the only time of the year we saw the entire family. Selfishly, I secretly wanted us to order pizza every year making less work and more time to spend with people. I still believe it’s necessary to streamline areas of Thanksgiving day to make less work for the host.

Tips on Hosting the Perfect Thanksgiving

I recently heard the statement “Getting Ready is a Key Aspect of Performance.” Thanksgiving Day is as close to a performance as I give all year so preparing is crucial. There are many steps you can complete 3 to 4 weeks ahead of time to reduce stress. There are also several hacks you can use to keep things running smoothly on the big day.

Make sure you plan a menu that only requires one oven.
Have guests bring the sides and desserts leaving the oven free for you to do the turkey. Be sure to request contributed items to things that are easy to transport and set up once they arrive. Items like side salads, dinner rolls, wine , cold appetizers, and cranberry sauce are perfect. If you need to keep food warm, place a towel and a bowl of hot water in the bottom of a cooler. Then, put your pans in the cooler until it’s time to serve. The food will still be warm for up to 2 hours.

Plan an Outdoor Activity.
As long as it’s not raining, spend a little time outside with your family. Start a game of football, make a pumpkin ring toss, take a nature bingo hike. Anything that gets the family outside for some fun, especially if there will be kids. You can also have coloring books and board games set out on a table to keep the kids busy while dinner is being prepped.

Tips on Hosting the Perfect Thanksgiving

Delegate tasks.
Your friends and family want to help. Write out tasks ahead of time with names of people who you know will offer their help. Have them be in charge of the outdoor activity, keep drink station stocked, wrangle the kids for dinner and help serve. Make sure you tell at least one family member to take a few photos.

Prepare the table.
Lay out all the serving dishes on the table with note cards of what will be served inside. Shop your house or yard for table decor. It’s likely you won’t need to buy a bunch of decor. Get everything set up how you’d like it to look, snap a picture and put all the dishes and decor in a laundry basket out of the way so you can easily pull it out Thanksgiving morning.

Eat early.
Rather than filling up on veggies and hard boiled eggs, have a plan to eat soon after guests arrive. This will give plenty of time for time with family before it gets late. Plus, it gives time for bellies to settle before dessert.

Plan the flow of the house.
Think about how people will travel through your house. Have the drink station out of the way so people don’t feel like a bother when refilling their drinks. Put the kids activity table in another room, in the basement or outside to keep them from running underfoot during dinner prep.

Make clean up easy.
If you want to use Grandma’s china for this special occasion, I understand. There is also great joy in using paper plates when everyone’s able to clean up after themselves. Other time savers are to use a plastic crock pot liner or plastic cups with a marker to write names. Make sure you have an empty dishwasher before dinner so you can easily toss in serving ware. To make sure you get to host Thanksgiving next year, have a plan for storing leftovers. Purchase a bunch of inexpensive take home containers or gallon bags for people to dish up their own leftovers.

Relax and enjoy.
Look for small moments of gratitude in a busy, loud but delicious holiday. With all the prep weeks ahead of time you should be able to enjoy your Thanksgiving holiday with your friends and family.
