Family Fun in Fort Wayne Part 1

Last week I was invited to join some lovely writers for a media tour of Fort Wayne. If I had to choose one word to wrap up our trip it would be ‘booming‘. The city has focused on making things more family friendly and there is an incredible amount of fun to be had for all ages.

Family Fun in Fort Wayne

I live in the Indy area which is only an hour and a half from Fort Wayne, yet I’d never been. My entire Mom’s side of the family is from Fort Wayne and Hunnington, yet I’d never been. Only once I started researching for my trip did I learn that it’s the second largest city in Indiana. To be honest, I wouldn’t have been able to tell you where in Indiana it was. Cut to day 2 of our media tour and I’m already telling my husband we’re coming back this summer because ‘it’s so fun!!!

Because we did so much on our three day trip to Fort Wayne, I’m going to separate this post into two parts according to the timeline we used for our trip.

Day 1 in Fort Wayne

Heading to Fort Wayne I was desperately trying to dodge pot holes through the torrential downpour that we were having as our first day of Spring in Indiana. Needless to say, I was a little weary from my drive but my mood quickly changed as I was greeted at check-in of my hotel Courtyard Fort Wayne Downtown at Grand Wayne Convention Center. The lobby was lively with happy voices spilling from the bar area of Conner’s Kitchen and the hotel had that wonderful Marriott smell. The hotel is beautifully decorated and I was excited to see such an awesome view of the Parkview Field baseball diamond from my room’s window.

The Hedge

The Hedge

Once I had a minute to rest, we were wisked off to a welcome reception at The Hedge hosted by Northeast Indiana Regional Partnership and Visit Fort Wayne. TIP: contact these two amazing groups if when you travel up north in Indiana. They know all the things and are so sweet! Along with a beautiful charchuterie spread from the amazing Bird and Cleaver we were able to learn how to use Julie’s printing press to make coasters! Julie Wall just celebrated her 6th year of owning The Hedge where she hosts craft workshops, sells her art and works out of her studio. I suggest stopping there to check out her art and her 100+ year old printing presses and stop by Sassie Cakes next door for some fresh cookie dough.

Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse

After the welcome reception we headed to dinner at Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse. If you’ve been to Ruth’s Chris, you know that they have the highest level of dining experiences. The food was specially prepared for us and the service was nothing short of outstanding. I highly recommend the Sweet Potato side dish and the Carrot Cake dessert.

Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse- Veal Osso Bucco Ravioli, Lobster Voodoo, Fresh Mozzarella and Tomato Salad, Ruth’s Chris Chop Salad, 4 oz Fillet, Garlic Herb Cheese Stuffed Oven Roasted Free-Range Heirloom Chicken, Jumbo Lump Crab Cake, Cheesecake with Fresh Berries

Day 2 in Fort Wayne

Fort Wayne Botanical Conservatory

Day two started off with an Amish breakfast from Rise n’ Roll at the Fort Wayne Botanical Conservatory. Conservatories and botanical gardens are my thing and I was very impressed with the collection of spieces and educational aspect at the FW Botanical Conservatory. High on the list was a kids garden that was staged as the 100 Acre Woods. Furthermore, they have beautiful waterfalls within their rain forest green house and a cactus that is over 100 years old in their dessert green house. This is definitely on my list for our visit in June. I know Sophia will love playing in the children’s garden.

The Landing

After my #plantlady dreaming in the conservatory we went out to The Landing for an exclusive hard hat tour. The Landing is a historical street that they’re completely overhauling to make 70 apartments and 56,000 SF of commercial space while keeping the historic integrity of the existing buildings. Development of The Landing will include unique, mostly local retail and restaurants, a coffee shop and brewpub—all destination-worthy. I love that they’re taking out the ability for vehicular traffic in that area to make it one large area for eating, drinking, shopping and living.

Promenade Park at the Riverfront

When we visit in June, I’m most excited to see the transformation and completion of Promenade Park. Located on the northern edge of downtown Fort Wayne, Promenade Park will be home to gathering spaces for the community, including a pavilion, amphitheater, canopy trail, kids’ canal, playground and more. They’re having a three day festival celebrating the completion June 21-23 which is why we’re visiting in June! I’m really excited for my kids to play in the kid’s canal and check out the canopy trail. A place for major family fun in Fort Wayne! If you’re able to drive to Fort Wayne for your trip, check out my favorite activity books for kids.

I’ll continue the with day 2 in my next post. To say there’s a lot to do in Fort Wayne is an understatement! You can also find a ton of video from my time there in my Highlight Stories on Instagram. In short, I had such a wonderful time, not only meeting new friends but experiencing all of the progression that Fort Wayne is experiencing. I appreciate Visit Fort Wayne for inviting me on this trip and being such amazing hosts.

Family Staycation at Conrad Indianapolis

Indianapolis is such a fun, vibrant city. We love taking family trips to the city to discover what’s new but there’s never enough time! Conrad Indianapolis was nice enough to put us up for two nights so we could have a family staycation downtown. When I say family staycation, I mean the entire family, babies and pets included! Needless to say, we were a hit with the Conrad staff and other guests staying for the weekend.

Family Staycation at Conrad Indianapolis

Right off the bat we felt welcome with the quick valet service right out front and a bellman to carry the ridiculous amount of luggage we packed. We somehow managed to pack more for that weekend stay than we did our previous week in Florida. Once we marveled over the revolving door and Chihuly-inspired chandelier in the lobby we headed up to our room to a special surprise. Our room was fitted with something special for each member of the family: a pack n’ play and onesie for Lilly, a dog bed, bowls and bandanna for Lexi, a fruit bowl for Sophia and wine and charcuterie for Jeffrey and I.

Room Service is a Must

I have yet to go to a hotel and not get room service so I knew we had to introduce the awesomeness to our girls. We started by ordering dessert for our late-night movie party on Friday night. The GM had suggested the Sugar Cream Pie and we also got the Chocolate Cake. I must admit, the sugar cream pie was warm and absolutely decadent. I did not regret our choices.

The next morning we opted for breakfast in bed and did not hold back. Calories don’t count in a hotel, right? Jeffrey was very happy with the Biscuits and Gravy with Potatoes. Sophia and I were even happier with the Chicken and Waffles and French Toast with Berry Compote. Fresh squeezed Orange Juice was the perfect addition to our sweet breakfast.

Family Pool Party

Conrad Indianapolis is one of the only downtown Indianapolis hotels that has an indoor pool. Our family requires a pool during our hotel stays. Not only is there a pool but also a large hot tub and a spa. The pool area had lots of comfortable lounge chairs and big fluffy towels to snuggle up in after our swim.

Don’t Forget Your Pup

One of the most exciting parts of our entire stay was bringing our dog Lexi. We’ve never taken her to the city so everything was very new to her. She was happy to keep watch over us at the big picture windows and snuggle in the beds while we were out of the room. I’m not saying she could be a city dog but she definitely had the best of the best at Conrad!

The things I’ll remember most about our stay with Conrad Indianapolis is how hospitable their staff was to us at every step of the way. Each person I spoke with was cheerful, kind and helpful. We had the opportunity to spend the entire day strolling around the mall shopping and eating without being worried about driving home. Our downtown trips area always so scheduled and by staying at Conrad we were able to slow down and let Sophia choose what we did. Turns out, room service, swimming, shopping and movies are all our family needs to have the perfect family staycation.

First Family Trip to Anna Maria Island

Aside from our Disney trips, Anna Maria Island was my very favorite vacation. The island is so laid back, beautiful and fun for all ages. It was the perfect mix between adventuring and just relaxing by the pool. We’re lucky enough to be able to go every other year so we’re very lucky to be going again in a few weeks to visit my in-laws who are snowbirds!

Anna Maria Island Must-Dos

Pool

You have got to find a place with an awesome pool! We went in February and the beach was super windy so it wasn’t a huge attraction for us. However, the pool was used multiple times per day every single day. Sophia requested breakfast by the pool every morning and promptly took her morning swim after.

I especially loved this pool because it had lush greenery completely surrounding the pool making it feel like our own private oasis!

Beach

Before we started our vacation I had dreams of reading for long hours on the beach like I had on past vacations. What a silly first-time Mom I was. The beach was very windy and chilly so we didn’t lounge out at the beach. The beach was for finding shells, stomping on sand castles and running away screaming from the waves.

We made sure to be down at the beach right after dinner to see the sunsets though. They were perfection. There are several beaches on Anna Maria Island. The rental we visited was a block away from a private beach which was really nice because it was empty! We also visited a few public beaches and even had dinner with our toes in the sand. Watch out, the drinks are delicious and strong!

The Sandbar Restaurant

Nearby Attractions

Marie Selby Botanical Gardens

The Marie Selby Botanical Gardens were my favorite attraction on this trip. Words do not do the gardens justice. Everywhere I looked I was enamored by the beautiful flora that surrounded me. We also spent quite a bit of time doing fun kid activities like their giant tree house. It is such a nice place to spend an entire day. They have a food court but I suggest bringing a picnic and blanket and finding a spot on the open lawn for lunch.

The Anna Maria City Pier

We had the chance to go see the pier before it had been damaged by Hurricane Irma in 2017. The city is working to rebuild it now, even stronger than before with a 3.2 million dollar upgrade. We walked along the pier looking at all the names carved into the planks, beautiful birds perched on the dock and men fishing in the water. Of course we had to stop for ice cream right across from the pier. You can never have too much ice cream on vacation. Speaking of treats, there’s also a ‘make your own donut’ shop in town called The Donut Experiment, that was really fun to try out.

The Donut Experiment

Sarasota Jungle Gardens

Not far from Anna Maria is an awesome opportunity to feed flamingos out of your hands! The Sarasota Jungle Gardens were so beautiful and had lots of really cool animals. We really enjoyed feeding the flamingos and watching their bird show.

Needless to say, I’m giddy about our trip back to Anna Maria Island next week. I’m not sure if I’m most excited to be in the warm sunshine, take Lilly to the beach for the first time or see Sophia run back to the ocean she’s missed so much.

If you’ve been to Anna Maria Island, what are some of your favorite attractions or restaurants? This time we’re renewing our vows on the beach on Valentine’s Day and going to Magic Kingdom for a day. Next week will go too fast!

Staying Active Around Hamilton County

The last thing you may want to do right now is to go play outside. It’s 12°F  right now. It’s cold. The kind of cold that catches your breath when you step outside.

But Spring Break will be here very soon and if you’ve not already planned a tropical vacation you’ll likely be wanting to do some fun things around here for your staycation.

I got together with local influencer Abby at Hello Miss Martha to bring you a list of what you can do right here and stay active over spring break! Head over to her site to see more suggestions for more of our favorite places.

Swimming

If you’re not heading to the beach, the next best thing is a warm indoor pool. Goldfish Swim School has family swim nights that are such a great way to brush up on skills between lessons and have fun with the whole family! Over Spring Break they’ll have free swim Mon-Fri 12 – 1 pm and Friday nights 6:30 – 8 pm.

Go Carting

I recently checked out K1 Speed with my husband for our montly date nights. It’s a really cool place with lots of IMS memorabilia and lost of space to have a big group hang out. They also have rooms for parties, food, a pool table and a few arcade games! The go-carts are pretty fast but they’re top priority is safety and there are many rules in place to make sure drivers are safe. Check out Groupon for some great discounts.

Bowling

I think bowling is one of those activities that is great for any age. It’s low key enough to bring your baby and little kids can start early with the bowling ramp. Plus, Pinheads has awesome food, arcade games and an outdoor area to eat or play volleyball!

Archery, Ropes Course, Horse Riding & Hiking

If you’re looking to do a few days of adventuring in nature Strawtown Koteewi is the place to go! They’ve got archery, a ropes course, zip lining, horseback riding and hiking. Last year we camped at White River Campgrounds and brought our bikes. It was an easy bike ride over to check out the ropes course and we met a few horses giving rides on our way! The campsite also has a creek that is part of White River and it’s perfect for creek stomping (I suggest wearing water shoes as the rocks are slippery).

7 Tips to Make your Road Trip to Disney Magical

Making Your Road Trip to Disney Magical- Growing up, one of my favorite things about family vacations was the road trip to our destination. We would load up our van with all our suitcases, snacks and games and head to places like Oklahoma, Michigan or Florida. Disney World was the most exciting trip because we could hardly wait to get there! I’ve got ten great tips on road trips to Disney.

7 tips to make your disney road trip magical

7 Tips to Make Your Road Trip to Disney Magical

  1. Let the kids choose their snacks. Have them decorate a paper bag before heading on the road trip or filling a bento box with their favorite snacks. You could also re-name your food with Disney names such as Peter Pan PB&J, Minnie Muffins or Jiminy Crickets on a Log (raisins on a celery with peanut butter).
  2. Bring along Disney games. Print out some Disney trivia and jokes for the ride. Try some Disney themed games like this UNO Disney Game or World of Disney Eye Found It Card Game.
  3. Create character prize bags (Tinkerbell, Mickey or your child’s favorite character). Pack prize bags for good behavior on the way.  The dollar store has lots of Disney items that are very inexpensive; add a few to a prize bag for a fun surprise.
  4. Find Hidden Mickeys. Before you leave, hide a few Mickey shapes in the car (and your food) and have kids search for them along the way. You could even add one of these Mickey Mouse ears car decal on your car!
  5. Night Time Extravaganza. Purchase some new Disney character pajamas and pull them out for a surprise if you are going to be traveling at night. Add some glow necklaces and bracelets from the dollar store and then you can pretend you are part of the Happily Ever After Fireworks Show.
  6. Picture This. Grab a couple disposable cameras or an Instax camera for your kids to capture Disney through their eyes. Start by having them take some photos of your road trip!
  7. Listen Up. Everyone needs a little down time during a road trip. Get a few Disney podcasts or audio books that each family member can listen to on their own or as a family. Some of my favorites are WDW Radio and WDW Prep To Go Podcast. You can also find tons of free Disney audio books through your local library.

What are your favorite ways to pass the time while on a road trip? Any special ways I’ve missed to make your road trip to Disney magical?
