Is Everybody Hanging Out Without Me (Discussion)

Hello book worms! I’m excited to hear what you thought about our May book selection: Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns). Did you get a chance to read it? I gave it a 2/5 stars. I struggled to get through it. I’ve got 3 questions below, and Lisa’s got 3 as well over on her blog. Feel free to discuss any or all of the questions in the comment section or link-up your post at the bottom. Lisa and I are sharing the same link-up, so you don’t have to enter on both blogs. The linky will close in a week. Alright, let’s get started!Mindy Kaling

I honestly like Mindy less after reading her memoir. She appears to have double standards in my opinion. One chapter she would talk about being proud of her ethnicity/body image/gender/acceptance towards others while the next she’d be very materialistic/self absorbed. Those are my honest opinions are I hope you didn’t get that impression of her. And now, for the discussion. Before I begin, I’ll remind you that there may be spoilers ahead. Also, feel free to use my questions as jumping points. Ask your own questions and start your own discussions.

1. To what do you attribute Mindy’s success in Hollywood? Her passion? Her ambition? Pure Talent? Luck? I attribute Mindy’s luck to her ambition of wanting to be a woman comedian in a very very difficult field. Mindy got a good education and knew how to network with people to get to where she wanted to be (plus a ton of hard work and rejection.)

2. A lot of Mindy’s humor is self-deprecating. Do you think she is too hard on herself? If so, does that perhaps speak to the pressure of celebrity? I don’t believe her self-deprecating humor is due to the pressures of being a celebrity. I think she has always had negative thoughts about herself and humor is how she copes with her thoughts and feelings.

3. What parts did you find most relatable? I’m not sure if I related to much of her story. I’ve not been in most of the situations that Mindy has experienced in her life. I slightly related to knowing the love her parents have for her in doing whatever they could to have a happy/healthy home for their family.

Now, it’s your turn! Answer any or all of the questions in the comment section below. Ask questions of your own. Or, link-up a blog post with your review and/or the answers to these questions. Also be sure to check out Lisa’s discussion questions on her blog. We’re sharing the same linky, so no need to link-up on both blogs. Remember our June selection is Ready Player One by Ernest Cline . It’s not a book I would typically read so I’m excited to see how I like it! We’ll be discussing Ready Player One on July 3rd.

  1. (Psst I don’t see the linky) I’m bummed you found her contradictory. Maybe I didn’t read it in one big chunk, so that’s why I didn’t feel it was contradictory. Anywho, to answer your questions (1) I attributed her success to grit, luck, and talent. She produced that play about Ben & Matt, and I didn’t “get it”, but she gained a lot of notice because of it. She was lucky that the right person saw that and that she knew the right people to get her a writing position at The Office. I think she’s talented so they kept her at The Office. (2) I liked Mindy’s humor. Not as self-deprecating as other comedians, which was nice. (3) I related to her a lot, as you see from my post, LOL.

    • I definitely see your point of view on liking her/her book. 🙂 I liked your review better than mine. It’s hard for me to rate a book so low, especially when it’s a memoir.

  2. I was with you, Shelly, I didn’t care for it either. LOL! I have to say that I love being a part of this every month! It really has been so much fun reading books that I would never choose for myself…I would have never even looked for or found any of these books on my own! I have June’s book on request, well the audio version anyway. Thank you so much for having this! Have a great weekend!

    • I’m so glad you team up and read/post with us Stacey! I just started Ready Player One and am really liking it so far (only on the first chapter.) I’m excited to read it since I listened to Mindy before May on car trips we had…so it’s been a while since I’ve read! Also, I PROMISE you’ll love September’s book!!! 😉 Are you going to BlogU by any chance?

      • Sadly no…but don’t I wish! 🙂 I wish they had more conferences around this area! I would really love to go to one, someday. 🙂 But they are kind of pricey for a single income family. One of these days we need to hook up…if you ever head my direction let me know! And I will let you know if I ever head your way! 🙂

  3. LOVE that you do an online book club…I read so many books I’d love to join…Don’t think I’ll be able to read the July one but going to see what you do for August. So glad I found you from #ThisMommasRamblings

    • Yay Karen! I’m glad you found us through Stacey! We’re announcing July’s book this week and it’s a pretty popular one, so you may have read it and be able to chime in with your thoughts!

  4. Agree! I liked her a little less after reading this. Felt similarly after reading Amy Poehler’s memoir. Kind of snarky. That being said, I enjoy reading funny stuff and it was fun to be inside her mind for a while…

    • I also liked Amy a TINY bit less, but still REALLY love her. Like, a lot. I don’t think we’d be friends, but I think she’s awesome. 😉 You should listen to Neil Patrick Harris’s. Very entertaining. 🙂
