New Firefly Landing Kid Space at Indiana State Museum

Downtown Indy just got one more indoor play area for young kids to explore! The new Firefly Landing kid space at Indiana State Museum opened to the public this week and we were invited to go check it out! The space is for children ages 6 and younger so it was the perfect spot for my girls! They both bounced around from activity to activity more delighted with each option. We already know they have great programs for kids and are very excited for this space to be available next time we visit the museum.

Firefly Landing is a classroom space for early childhood public and school programs, and a spot where families will find new, daily engagement to help the museum’s littlest visitors enjoy activities just for them, including interactive story time, sensory tables, hands-on activities and more.

The space will be open Tuesdays through Sundays, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. unless a scheduled program or reserved event is taking place.

Firefly Landing will be the new home of the following awesome programs:

  • Young Explorers- Ages 4-5 years
  • Messy Mondays- Ages 2-5 years
  • Preschool Fridays-Ages 5 and younger

Between their awesome temporary exhibits, they cycle through, their amazing permanent exhibits, the IMAX and Firefly Landing, ISM is a full-day attraction. Be sure to take a lunch or eat in their restaurant Farmer’s Market Cafe. There is so much to do and see at this awesome Indiana museum!

Fall Events at Indiana State Museum

I’m not sure why but this year I’m really getting in the mood for Fall. I’m excited for pumpkin patches, cozy sweaters and warm apple cider. Strangely, this year I’m excited to check out some ghost related events! I’ve always been a scaredy cat when it comes to spooky Halloween festivities but I’m going to put my big girl pants on and try something new this year!

1. Quirky Queries: Ghost Hunting 101 – Indiana State Museum (Indianapolis) 
What: Join the Friday Night Paranormal ghost hunting group to hear ghost hunting tales, learn about paranormal equipment and discover stories about hauntings at the historic sites.

2. Ghost Walks – Lanier Mansion (Madison)

What: Learn about owls, bats, raccoons, snakes and other creatures of the night, and enjoy tricks and treats along the way.

6. High Spirits – T.C. Steele (Nashville) 
What: Enjoy an evening of magic, hors d’oeuvres and cocktails with Richard Darshwood as he puts on a show of mystery and intrigue that must be seen to be believed!

7. Spooky Halloween Cruises – Whitewater Canal (Metamora)
What: Experience a spooky evening boat ride when the Ben Franklin III Canal Boat will be hauntingly decorated, and a professional storyteller tells family-friendly spooky stories.

8. Ghost Stories Under the October Sky – T.C. Steele (Nashville)
What: Bring a picnic supper and blanket and bundle up for an evening of spooky storytelling by the cemetery at T.C. Steele State Historic Site. Famous and local ghost stories will be told, and popcorn will be served.

9. Fort Fright – Vincennes (Vincennes) 
What: Have a spooky good time exploring Fort Knox II during “no-scare hours” when little ones can enjoy the fun of games, activities, a hayride and more. During “haunted hours,” families can test their courage by visiting spooky stations located across the site and taking a haunted hayride.

Summer Events at the Indiana State Museum- If you’ve ran out of time to book summer camps and are still looking for some fun activities this summer, here is a great list of activities going on at the Indiana State Museum. If you haven’t been to ISM in a couple years, it’s totally changed. There are enough family friendly exhibits to fill your entire day, not to mention all of the extra events going on throughout the year. It’s About Time: The Art of Felrath Hines – open June 22 through Sept. 29

Discover the life and incredible art from Hoosier artist Felrath Hines, who graduated from Crispus Attucks High School and attended Saturday youth art classes at the John Herron School of Art. An abstract artist who used different shapes and colors to communicate, he also worked as an art conservator and restored noted artist Georgia O’Keeffe’s paintings. Explore interactives, listen to the jazz that inspired Hines and try your hand at creating an artwork with colorful shapes.

Hoosier Salon – open Aug. 2 through Oct. 13

Enjoy artworks from Hoosier artists from around the state in what’s considered to be the preeminent juried exhibition of Indiana art at the 95th annual Hoosier Salon.

Spring at The Indiana State Museum

Yes, it may still be snowing outside but Spring is on it’s way! Indiana State Museum has an amazing line up for the months of February-April. Several new exhibits and programs are in the works and they want you to come check them out!

Exhibits

Color of Style – open March 16 through July 28

Who we are shapes how we dress – and the colors we choose to wear. In this new experience, learn how perceptions of color have changed over time and see incredible outfits from the museum’s collection. Discover which color best defines you, let your creativity shine in the Style Studio, and find your perfect Instagrammable moment in this experience that’s all about playing with color and style. Supported by the Arts Council of Indianapolis and the City of Indianapolis.  

Registration for all programs is required 3 days in advance of each event unless otherwise noted. Museum admission is not included but can be purchased for a discounted group rate unless otherwise noted. Eco Science Fair

Color of Style at the Indiana State Museum

This March, visitors will explore style through the lens of color in a new experience at the Indiana State Museum: Color of Style.

Whether people think about it or not, who we are shapes how we dress – and the colors that we choose to wear. This new experience will showcase more than 50 outfits from the museum’s historic clothing and costume collection, including everyday wear from the 1800s, a party dress from the 1920s, an outfit from the Jackson 5, and incredible pieces from iconic Hoosier designers Stephen Sprouse and Bill Blass. 

“Color of Style is an opportunity for visitors to see how amazing our collection of historic clothing is,” said Meghan Smith, curator of the exhibit. “Featuring everything from high fashion gowns to homemade baby clothes, this experience gives our visitors a chance to engage with the collection and remember their own fashion histories.”

From the start, the experience will immerse visitors in color. They will wind their way through a color tunnel on their way into the exhibit, then take a quiz to discover which color best represents them. Inside the experience, nine fashion pods will feature outfits from different decades and even centuries, divided by their colors: red, yellow, blue, green, orange, purple, pink, white and black.

Visitors of all ages can get creative in the Style Studio, where they’ll sketch their own unique fashions, soak in ideas from inspiration boards and create their own patterns to show off. Elsewhere in the exhibit, visitors can cast votes to determine “Who wore it better?” for various iconic fashions, try on colorful accessories and pose on the cover of a magazine, and more. 

While the experience looks at the evolution of color choices and style over time, modern-day Hoosier designers will also be featured in special videos, including textile artist Kate Ellis, artist and indigo dyer Rowland Rickets, and up-and-coming fashion designer Yemisi Sanni. Plus, fashions and personal stories from real, everyday people will be shared within the experience itself, alongside the museum collection’s pieces. 

“This new experience allows visitors to explore their own sense of style and think about how they associate different colors with themselves or others,” said Cathy Ferree, president and CEO of the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites. “Visitors have a chance to explore the stories of Hoosiers throughout time and engage in self-exploration and creativity throughout the experience.” 

Color of Style will be at the Indiana State Museum from March 16 through July 28, and entry is included with purchase of general museum admission. This experience is supported in part by the Arts Council of Indianapolis and the City of Indianapolis.
