Favorite Disney Gear for Kids at the Parks

We’re headed to the most magical place on earth in less than a month. Of course I am consumed with all things Disney. I’ve been looking for the best outfits for my family and I and wanted to share what works best for us when we head to Walt Disney World Resorts. I’ll share a women’s post but this is what I found works best for our daughter.

What Should My Kid Wear to Disney?

  1. Custom Magic Band– Magic bands are good forever and they really hold up well through sweat, sunscreen and Splash Mountain.
  2. Minnie Ears– Minnie Ears have exploded over the past few years. People make them and pay lots of money for custom ears. We found this rainbow sequins pair on Amazon for almost half of what they are in the parks.
  3. Fanny Pack– I know! They’re totally in again though. Our daughter is always carrying a purse with her lip gloss, pen, money, bows and her mirror. We want her to be able to feel responsible to carry her own money for souvenirs.
  4. Cute Sunnies– Sunglasses are a must in Florida no matter what time of year you visit. We love these because they’re flexible and tough. They are also polarized which a lot of kid sunglasses don’t have.
  5. Pin Lanyard– We love pin trading and our daughter does as well. It’s a great way for her to talk to kids and other park guests. It’s also the perfect way to collect an inexpensive souvenir each time we visit.
  6. Minnie Skirt– Our girlie wants to wear her princess dresses all day every day but they can get hot in the parks. She settled for a little Disney Bounding skirt to look like Minnie this year.
  7. Character Shirt– The Disney Store runs sales all the time so we usually pick up our favorite character shirts before heading to the park. Target is great for this as well.
  8. Comfortable Shoes– They’re going to want to wear flip flops or princess shoes but you’ve got to put your foot down with this. Broken in tennis shoes are necessary for them and yourselves while walking all day in the parks.

What kid gear am I missing besides the obvious of sunscreen and tons of water?!

Kids Chore List for Young Kids

This post is part of a social shopper marketing insight campaign with Polinate Media Group® and The J.M. Smucker Company, but all opinions are my own. #pmedia #miloskitchen http://my-disclosur.es/OBsstV

Do you use a kids chore list? At what age did they start doing chores? Our daughter is 3 and she has weekly chores that are her responsibility. We’ve still not decided on how or when to start allowance (or if we will) but for right now she has specific tasks that she needs to do before she can play. In our mind, this will help her as she has more difficult jobs around the house to be a normal routine. It may not help her to enjoy doing these chores in high school or even as an adult but it will help her understand that everyone plays a part. She understands that the sooner chores are done, the sooner Mommy and Daddy can play with her. Her favorite chore is to help take care of Lexi by giving her Milo’s Kitchen home-style dog treats.

Kids Chore List

I’ve seen many suggestions on Pinterest regarding the best chores for different ages. I think that all depends on the family situation and what the child is able to accomplish. We’ve had a Montessori approach to most things in our home since day one. She’s had access to her plates, cups, utensils to be able to get herself a snack or water at any time. We have step stools in all bathrooms which encouraged her to be able to go potty on the toilet and wash her hands at an early age. Everything in her bedroom and play areas are accessible for her to get out AND put away (emphasis on the ease of being able to put it away.)

As a three year old we expect her to take care of herself and the environment she is in (home, school, library etc.) Part of this stems from my anxiety around clutter but also to help her get in the habit of caring for her environment. We also expect her to be helpful to us around the house aside from her messes.

Our 3 Year Old’s Chores:

  • Sorting the clean silverware and her dishes when I clean the kitchen
  • Taking care of our dog Lexi (her favorite job)
  • Emptying all the small trashcans (weekly)
  • Dusting the TV area (weekly)

When I talk about her taking care of our dog Lexi, I don’t mean everything that is involved in taking care of a pet. We don’t make her scoop poop, give her a bath or brush her teeth but she does help or do everything else.

  • Feeds our dog
  • Lets her out of her room when we get home
  • Opens the door to let her outside
  • Helps take her on walks
  • Calms her down at vet visits
  • Plays ball with her outside
  • Gives her her favorite treats (Milo’s Kitchen Home-Style dog treats)

One major reason Sophia’s biggest chore is to take care of Lexi is to help her learn to care for others. Lexi is a member of our family and she deserves to be treated like our family. That’s why we buy her the best in dog food and treats. We wouldn’t want her eating anything we wouldn’t put in our mouths. We chose Milo’s Kitchen Home-Style Dog Treats because they use 100% real chicken, beef, duck or sweet potato as the #1 ingredient. Like with our family’s food, we want her to have treats that are made totally free of artificial flavors or colors. Another bonus is that it’s made here in the USA so we know what standards it has to go through before being placed on the shelves at Meijer.

Sophia has learned how to give commands for Lexi to do her tricks. Our pup will run through every trick she knows begging to get a Milo’s Kitchen Home-Style dog treat. Lexi’s favorite flavor is the sweet potato slices that are 100% real sweet potatoes basted with savory chicken broth. We get her treats when we pick up groceries at Meijer. Take advantage of this mPerks offer of 30% off Milo’s Kitchen Home-Style dog treats now through 10/7 (while supplies last) before you head to your local Meijer!

7 Skills Every Toddler Should Have

Easy Peanut Butter Recipes for Kids

Easy peanut butter recipes for kids are a must for getting protein into my child. I remember the days fondly when Sophie used to eat like a champ. She wasn’t able to verbalize what she wanted to eat but we knew her go-to foods and it helped her to sleep through the night. For about six months she has been such a picky eater. We’ve tried several tactics on getting her to eat but the most successful is sticking to the foods she likes. We wish her favorite foods were salmon and spinach but we all know a toddler’s palate is more in-tuned to milk and peanut butter. That’s why I’ve decided to get crafty with different peanut butter recipes for her lunch box and after school snack. I’m going to share three easy peanut butter recipes for kids using foods that you likely already have on hand.

Peanut Butter Banana Sushi
Easy Peanut Butter Recipes for Kids

I love figuring out one staple food that works for my daughter and mixing it up for different recipes. Here I did 1 peanut butter 3 ways. The first recipe is:

Peanut Butter Banana Sushi Roll Ups (a favorite after school snack)

Ingredients:

  • Whole wheat tortilla roll
  • Peanut Butter
  • Banana
  • Honey

Spread peanut butter on the whole wheat tortilla evenly but not all the way to the edges. Lay the banana in the center and drizzle with honey. Roll up banana with the tortilla and cut into bit sized pieces. *Can also sprinkle coconut or sprinkles for added fun.

Strawberry Peanut Butter Quesadilla

Ingredients:

  • Whole wheat tortilla
  • Peanut Butter
  • Sliced strawberries

Warm a pan on stove top to medium heat. Spread one half of the tortilla with peanut butter and the other half with sliced strawberries. Fold in half and cook in the warm pan. Flip the quesadilla once it starts to brown slightly. Cut into triangles and serve. *Can swap out the strawberries for any fruit. Sophie really likes blueberries or bananas as well.
Peter Pan Simply Ground Peanut Butter and Strawberry Quesadilla

Frozen Peanut Butter Banana Bark

Ingredients:

  • Freeze dried banana chips
  • 1-2 c plain greek yogurt
  • Peanut Butter
  • 1 tbsp Honey
  • Unsweetened shredded coconut

Line your pan with parchment paper. Add one layer of banana chips along the bottom of the pan. Heat your peanut butter until it’s slightly melted. Mix the peanut butter and honey with yogurt until desired consistency (can add more peanut butter for a nuttier taste). Dollop spoonfuls of yogurt mix onto bananas and carefully smooth over top. Sprinkle shredded coconut over the yogurt and stick in the freezer over night. Break apart bark and serve. *Bananas can be substituted for any freeze dried fruit. You can experiment with fresh fruit but you will get a different consistency because of the added moisture.

Frozen Peanut Butter Banana BarkMy favorite part about each of these recipes is how healthy they are. They seem like treats to her because they’re so sweet but they have fresh, whole ingredients that help fuel my growing toddler. She has been eating this crunchy peanut butter better than the smooth. It’s also a win in my book because there are no artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives so I’m confident in feeding it to my little girl.

We’ve been working on going through the entire process of our activities with Sophie because that is what she is learning at her Montessori school. I took Sophie to our local Walmart to have her grab the ingredients and put them in the cart. We checked out, headed home and laid out all of the ingredients for one recipe on the island. Sophie cut the strawberries with an egg slicer while I spread the peanut butter. She laid out all of her strawberry slices and helped me fold the quesadilla in half. Soph helped me load our dishes in the dishwasher. I cooked and cut her quesadilla and we shared the meal we had just made together. Having her help with each part of the process through the end helps her understand that there are many steps in her food being laid in front of her at snack time.

Do you have your kids help you in the kitchen? What about buying the food, helping with the meal and doing the clean up? It’s a long process but we’re focusing on making sure we do this once per week with Sophie.

Thanksgiving Kid Crafts

Thanksgiving is right around the corner! That means lots of delicious comfort food, football, playing in the leaves and lots of kids running underfoot. If you live in the Midwest, you’re never sure what the weather will be like on Thanksgiving day. It could be 75 degrees and sunny or snowing here in Indiana. Having crafts that can be made inside or outside is a must, so I’ve rounded up a few of my favorites for this year. DIY Thanksgiving Kid Craft Ideas

Let’s DIY: Kid’s Room

Because my mind is completely in design mode for the new house, I’m going to do a DIY roundup of kid’s rooms. I’ve been doing a lot of Pinterest searching for how I want to decorate Sophie’s room since her room is top priority when we move in this Sunday. I’ve realized I gravitate towards the rooms with white walls with whimsical pops of color throughout the room. I also like geometric designs as an accent wall.

Here are my favorites from this week:

  1. Vinyl Houses by Kinderstad
  2. Pink Ceiling by Sherry
  3. House Shelves by Paul + Paula
  4. House Bed by Diana
  5. Closet Workspace by Chassity

I absolutely love the white closet door with the painted edge. I kind of want to do that to every door in our house. Pink everywhere! I can’t wait to get started painting the entire house but Sophie’s room is what I’m most excited to start decorating. What was the first room you completed in your home?
